Why oh why do people insist on taking their horrid muts to Badminton (or any horse event for that matter) when thy don't seem to be used to horses?!
I've just turned on BBCi to watch the X-Country and literally the first thing I see is a scottie dog running out under the line to bark at Mary King's horse! The owner had it on a lead and pulled it back under but why stand where the dog can do that then let it happen (and not give the dog a smack for doing it). It's just so selfish and dangerous to allow a dog to do that when a horse is approaching the fence and Tina commentatig pointed it out too. At the next fence you could hear a dog barking its head off at the horse, it just winds me up!
Just added - Now she's being chased by a bloody terrier whilst approaching a jump, dog snapping at her heels - aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! I hope the owners are asked to leave!

I cant believe it!!!! First horse and already a bloody dog loose!! well donr Mary and apache sauce for ignoring the little woof!!

There was a big debate about this last year, as a dog ran out at a rider at Badminton that year as well... Bl**dy ridiculous that they allow dogs in tbh!

I know a lot of people on here strongly defend their right to take their dog with them to horsey events and I have no problem with it IF they're well behaved. I think it's fair enough for a half day at a local ODE, but a full day at Badminton or similar is just too long for them really.

And definitely annyone who's dog gets loose or causes problems should be asked in no uncertain terms to leave and not come back.

Poor Mary, she nearly picked up 20 penalties because of that terrier.

Just makes my blood boil! Presumably the people there are horsey - surely they understand how difficult this is in perfect circumstances, let alone with some eejit's mutt chasing you. The idiocy of some people is beyond me.

They shouldn't allow them. One horse chased is one too many yet it happens over and over again. Organisers are trying their hardest to reduce danger in what is always going to be a high risk sport - here's the obvious one, ban bl**dy dogs!!!!!!

How awesome is Mary King, though?!!!

Agree on all counts, KVS.
Well done to Mary King - you could almost see her thinking 'ignore the damn dog'! Even a horse that has hunted (would have thought a lot of these have) and is used to hounds would have difficulty concentrating with that sort of distraction.

Opps think I posted in the wrong place as put a post in latest news. It's such a shame that a few bloody idiots spoil it for everyone who has a well controlled animal but it's just not fair on the competitors. Apart from shooting dog and owner on sight perhaps a ban is the only answer. I am just so glad that Mary got over clear as I was so mad at that ugly mutt.

I have to say having been watching this morning that I'm beginning to think a ban on dogs should be introduced too.

It's a shame that the few spoil it for the many responsible dog owners though. I take my mini JRT who is beautifully behaved, very used to horses, and small enough to carry if she gets tired. She thoroughly enjoys it.

If incidents continue to happen whereby irresponsible owners allow dogs to get loose or even snap/bark at horses whilst on the lead then I think a ban on dogs may be in the offing.

I did type in my first reply to this about a ban..but deleted it as I didnt want to be shot down but I have to agree with you ona dog ban!! like someone else said ..a whole dy at badminton is a long day for any dog...

What is it with big events. People seem to love bringing noisy yapping uncontrollable dogs to Badminton and screaming kids to Olympia etc! However I'm sure there are many dogs there that are very well behaved and these naughty dogs are giving them all a bad name. I felt so sorry for Mary King. She coped so well with it.

I dont think dogs should be allowed. I know anyone who suggests this on HHO tends to get shot down in flames, but there are multiple reasons as to why they should NOT be allowed....and, as far as I see, no reasons as to why they SHOULD.

First there is the control issue - as has just been proven. How anyone can be as irresponsible as to let their dog chase a horse is beyond me.

Secondly is the issue of fighting. When I was at Badders I saw three separate dog scraps - mostly involving terriers.

Then there is the issue of the dogs being frightened. I saw so many cowering dogs - and several tiny puppies too, which I think is so unfair

It isn't the horses that sets them off, but the crowd and the sudden tension when a horse is coming.

1 got loose at Chatsworth 2 years ago at about fence 2 and followed a horse around to about 23 before an official rugby tackled it.

Have to say I agree with banning dogs at events like Badminton. Safety for the horses and riders must be paramount. An out of control dog can cause carnage. These events are dangerous enough as it is without the dogs causing mayhem and possibly causing a rider to go out the side door or worse

Fire away! I agree, ban them. What is the point of taking them anyway? Street cred having a terrier? No cred if they escape and chase a horse!

It really made me cross last year watching it last year when one got loose and chased a horse, How Irresponsible! I think the same horse that got chased was the same one that a few jumps later got stabbed by a flag poor thing. Maybe a ban would solve this, and I wouldn't be surprised if the organisers do this next year. (Btw I am a dog owner)

FWIW, it was Jonty Evans who was chased by a dog last year. He was the rider following the horse who landed on the flag. While I am writing this another horse is being chased by a dog. All the hard work, expense and dedication all competitors and supporters put in - they don't deserve it ruining because a f**kwit can't control their dog.

I have always taken a dog when I go to an event, walking a xc course without one would seem strange, I don't do walking without a dog

. But after seeing those 2 terriers chasing horses, and heard all the barking I think they maybe should be banned. The 2nd dog with the flexi lead attached could have caused such a nasty accident. Like with so many things it is the irresponsible few who spoil it for the rest but the safety of the competitors has to come first.

Not commented on this issue before, but I strongly believe dogs should not be taken to most shows, at least the big ones. It is not a nice way for a dog to spend it's day, being dragged through crowds, getting hot and tired (how many owners carry a bowl and water?)
Yes, if they are controlled, no problem to others, but there always seem to be more uncontrolled dogs than properly controlled. I do not consider a dog on a flexi-lead as being under control.
Also, as a stall holder at shows for many years, it is sickening how many dogs are allowed to pee on goods and poo in the middle of a stand without it being picked up.
