Dogs at Badminton

Personally I think having dogs at any horsey events or on livery yards and hacking out with a loose dog is just asking for trouble. It's a shame that a few ignorant people with untrained mutts ruin things for those who are in control of well behaved dogs.
I went to a sponsored ride last week and was amazed that there were so many dogs as it clearly said on the entry form no dogs were allowed.
After the what happened last year and at badminton today I do think dogs should be banned from larger horsey events.

Don't take it out on the dogs - ban the irresponsible dog owners. In fact all irresponsible dog owners (especially those who avoid their duty of picking up their dog's muck) should be shot IMO. My mum and I took our 18 month old JRT today, he was a model of good behaviour as we kept him on a short lead at all times and the second he tried to bark at a horse I slapped him on the bum and growled at him - no more barking. He then saved it for his time in the dog creche, we went to pick him up and he was in his cage covered with a blanket

If dog owners aren't prepared to take full reponsibility for their dog's actions and keep a very firm hand on the lead at all times, yes then they should be banned. Sadly, this seems to cover most people.

Its funny, a few days ago people were bitching saying they like taking their dogs, suddenly now a lot are now saying ban them!

I say ban them personally. Its ridiculous. I guess we have to wait for a horse fall caused by a dog putting the horse / rider off, before anything is done...

Next you will all ban loose kids!!!

Owners should be lifetime banned of dogs that did get loose. The majority are responsible dog owners, safety IS paramount, BUT not all of us have the luxury of childminders or dog sitters on tap.

Personally I wouldnt subject a dog to being there all day in the crowds, however I know 100% our 6month old pup is better behaved and wouldnt dream of chasing a horse!!! Its how you bring them up.

If they are yappy or chase things that move, leave them at HOME!

Not just loose ones, ban them all!

I hope the owners of those terriers today feel ashamed of themselves - we are not far away from seeing a real accident due to some muppet's dog.

I certainly think the woman we saw dragging round a small terrier with one whole leg encased in a cast should have been asked to leave. Poor dog

I think a difficulty position really as people argue that they can't leave their dogs at home due to the time they are out (at the event). However, personally I think it is unfair on a dog to expect it to be happy to be dragged round crowds for hours on end (esp in the warm weather) and it's no wonder some dogs decide to 'break free' and entertain themselves. The owners are irresponsible and, if Badminton is offering a 'creche' then people should use them. I live near Bramham park and go every year, we take our dogs generally on x-country day to walk the course but then get very very bored after a couple of hours and we're lucky enough then to be able to take them back home and come back ourselves later.

I cam see the problems from the competitors and the publics point of view but it is the owners that are to blame not the dogs (same with children) people should have control over them. They shouldn't expect a dog to be content sitting in on place for god knows how long whilst owner watches a fence. I think it would be sad to ban dogs it's all part of the atmosphere and tradition I think and why should 99.9% of the people watching be punished for one or two idiots' behaviour? I know at bramham if you are caught with your dog loose you are fined for it.

As for the barking though - remember if watching on TV this can be much distorted if the camera mic is near to the dog. The horse is unlikely to hear it and even less likely to give a monkeys. I would hope my horse would be concentrating enough at that stage to not notice a dog bark! What about cheering, clapping people and screaming kids?!

I remember a few years ago coming downhill towards the end of an open course taking off over a ski jump and on landing saw ( with absolute horror) a ******* lady with small terror on lead walking up the track directly towards me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I screamed at her - she screamed when she realised I was coming directly at her - fast! Then she stood rooted to the spot
I was trying to pull up but couldn't that quickly so I just closed my eyes and waited for the bang.
Somehow my wonderful honest horse managed to get past without hitting her, the dog or getting tangled in the lead.
Not something I would want to deal with again. Some peoples stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

We used to have a Red Setter who used to love coming to shows with us. She would sit by the horsebox all day and not put a foot wrong. Didnt have to be on a lead, she just sat there. It was actually the only time she did behave herself!

She was a nightmare at home! LOL!!!!

I wouldnt take a dog to Badminton though. Maybe because i own Mastiffs and they would get halfway round and then sit down, never to move again unless of course there was a burger van nearby! How embarrassing must it be to be the owner of that terrier!

First of all I have two terriers, you just TRY and call them scabby to my face!

Secondly, I have two puppies who spent the day behaving impeccably amongst all the distractions.

Thirdly, I think they should ban STUPID people and leave me and my dogs to enjoy our day in peace. FWIW I arrived at 9 ish and took my dogs home at 1pm because they were tired. I guess its all down to being a good owner.

I'm glad that you are responsible and keep your animals under control, as I'm sure 95% of people do. Unfortunately it only takes one dog to spook, distract or otherwise impede one horse for a nasty accident to happen. It just shocked me so much watching several horses being chased by dogs who's owner's have not got a clue. There is no way to tell if someone is able to control their dog when they arrive and the safety of the horses & riders must be paramount.

I have just finished watching the TV coverage and was appalled that so many people let their dogs bark and lunge at the horses!
I think it's discusting (sp) that horses were chased and believe the owners of these ill trained dogs should be banned from attending equestrian events for life.
Having dogs at any horse show or event is an accident waiting to happen and I am shocked that so many of those attending Badminton with their dogs showed such little respect for the competitors by letting their dogs behave badly!
I think dogs should be banned from major equestrian events following what I have seen on TV today.
