Just looked on preloved and the number of older dogs being rehomed due to personal circumstances, a lot of them because landlords wont accept animals, is incredibly depressing. There are loads just within 10 miles of my area. But also lots of ads for people with puppies they cant move on. The local sanctuarys are full. Its so sad. Also smaller pets like rabbits and guinea pigs which people haven't got time for ! How much time does a gp or bunny take up ?

I was talking about this to my husband, and he thought that there didn't used to be so many pet dogs. If you worked full time you wouldn't have had a pet dog. There were working dogs and rich peoples pets. Nowadays we get whatever we want, as soon as we want it, and be damned with the consequences.
I look on preloved sometimes and it breaks my heart.

But both of 'our girls' are rehomed and older - we always look to rehome a dog rather than buy a puppy and prefer them older.

Having said that, they have both came to us through word of mouth, and am not sure if I would be looking at preloved for one.....

Both our cats came from Preloved. I can't see any difference from word of mouth really, they were free, they needed a home.. I've only an issue with buying a young animal from a Preloved "breeder", I'd never do that.

It is heart breaking. There are a lot of stupid and selfish people who really shouldn't have had animals in the first place.

We've just bought a pup. Chihuahua. I know, I know, not many peoples choice, but we love him. Anyway, I was looking at rehoming to start with, absolutely awful, heart breaking, there are so many. The only reason we didn't go down that route, is because of my small grand children. A lot of the dogs wouldn't have coped in a family environment or were too unpredictable around small children. It just annoys me ignorant people, buying/ breeding and then disposing of, when too inconvenient.

........ .

Your husband is right, but those were the days when we tended to consider how today's actions may impact on tomorrow. We didn't have well meaning rescue centres and the now hugely profitable sanctuaries, who were vie-ing with each other for our sympathy and our money. Come to think of it, 50 odd years ago all that we had were a few well meaning and possibly dotty old ladies who left massive (and justified) legacies to the likes of the Battersea Dog's Home, and the ILPH.

We didn't have such an easy optioned way out whereby we simply passed on our problems to someone else, and we didn't have such a system in place where the breeders and producers of these animals, after perhaps a year or even less of experience, set themselves up as experts.

Quite simply, during the days that your husband, presumably, laments, we accepted responsibility for our actions. I have grave doubts about Society's current usage of the word 'Charity'.

Alec.

I wish people would think ahead-if you rent and are going to be for the foreseeable, don't have an animal that will live to 10+ and that landlords probably won't allow.don't like it? tough. I didn't have any of my own animals until I had my own place.

I was recently looking for a yard cat/kittens and agree that Preloved/Gumtree are heartbreaking.

If I had to wait until I owned my own home I would never be able to have a dog!

Our landlord has put the house up for sale and so we've been looking for a new rental property. Of the 20+ we've enquired about only two refused to consider dogs. I even managed to find a house share/granny flat type arrangement willing to accept two large heavily shedding dogs. Except in the most extreme circumstances it's no excuse at all for ditching a dog on Preloved - though I am thankful every day that some scumbag put Dax on there.
