We want to give a rescue a home, with so many how do you choose which one?! Have confused myself by looking at too many

I'd arrange to meet a few and see which personalities stand out! And be realistic about your expectations/requirements - all dogs can look cute, lots have a sad story behind them, think about the one that will fit into your home best long term/what best you can cope with :)

Make a list of what you want, breed, temperament, exercise requirements, old, young etc and then be flexible and willing to be led by the folk who look after them.

Its also worth looking into the rescue itself given you will be relying on them for assessment of the dog, support post adoption and to take dog back, either early on as not worked or often is the case as circumstances change in future (many contract you to return the dog to them).
Do they homecheck? Do they vet check dogs and send them out neutered (if adult) , vaccinated, free of parasites?
I think its easier to find a rescue/s you want to adopt with and work with them to select a dog than try to pic from online as sometimes the photo or write up doesn't do the dog justice anyway.
I didn't have great first experience adopting and would go about things differently as once you've fell for a dog its harder to back out & go elsewhere.
