I was stewarding at a show today and we must have had at least half a dozen calls go out over the loud speaker saying dogs were left in cars/lorry.

Why do people do it - there really is no excuse.

It annoys the hell out of me!
Why bring your dog to an event if you are going to leave him/her in the car???
Surely your dog would be better off in his home environment??
His bed, a bowl of water and space to move around rather than cooking in the boot of a car.

I agree, in the heat we have had today I would smash the window first and face the music of the owner afterwards, don't think they would get a lot of support though.

Your right - better still leave them at home.

To those who would smash the car windows, whilst I agree that leaving dogs in hot cars with no ventilation is not right how would you feel if you smashed the window of the car, the dog took fright and ran away and got run over? After all if you smash the car window there is no means of containing the dog within the car, and presumably you are not intending to look after the dog until the owner returns.

I've always wondered that.

When we went to the Shooting and Countryman Show earlier this year it was baking hot to say it was March. A call came over the tannoy for "owner of car reg number xxxx xxx" about 5 times, then the final call for the owner was "will the owner of car xxxx xxx please return to your vehicle as YOU HAVE LEFT YOUR DOG IN IT!!!" A collective 'Tut' and cries of "disgusting! ...don't deserve a dog" could probably have been heard miles away! Especially as dogs were more than welcome at the show. We took our pointer pup, who didn't pee all day and saved it up to do a HUGE one in the middle of a marquee *hangs head in shame* :D

I was at a show all day and left mine at home, was just to hot as they would have spent alot of time tied to the trailer and even then i thought that was a bit mean in this heat let alone in a car. I left them at home in there massive crate with the curtains shut windows open and a fan blowing down on them.

Whilst I agree with you I would still do it. If you smash the window the dog(s) still have a chance, leave them in the car they die. I would take that risk.

If only all owners were as thoughtful as you :) I bet they appreciated it.

One of my childhood memories is of my Dad smashing a car window to rescue a very distressed cocker spaniel, it was in the car park of an agricultural show. He broke it with the jack & lots of people supported him (after the deed was done, they all stood about wringing their hands), the police also agreed it had been the right thing to do. The dog in question was in no fit state to run off & had to be cooled with water. My Dad was bi-polar & did first & thought afterwards, luckily for this dog.
