Why do people take there dogs to asda or tesco in this heat then leave them in the car with a tiny gap of air getting in ??????

I've seen 3 dog in two days it's really not on, do people not realise dogs boil :mad::mad:

Sorry rant over

Also what is the law if any if you see a dog locked in a car in heat like we have had?

RSPCA now have more powers to deal with this. I very rarely stop at a supermarket with the dogs and usually don't have to. If I'm going somewhere with them, especially when its hot, I usually make the extra trip without them to the supermarket if necessary.

I had the dog out today and I did stop for something to eat, I parked under a tree, damp towels up acting as curtains where there was any light hitting the car, all windows open and tailgate open, full bowl of water, he was in my light of sight and I checked on him four times in 45 minutes to see if he needed water etc.
A woman had parked in the same area with two fair/red haired toddlers in the direct sunlight with the two front windows open a crack (yes, we did mention it very loudly to the staff). If people do this to their own children I am not surprised others do it with their dogs.

My sister called the police on a couple a few weeks ago. I was really proud of her as she is normally not a confrontational person.

The sad thing is the people in the shop next to the parked car had "been watching it for ages and the dog was getting really distressed" - Seriously!

Honestly? Without wanting to be contraversial, I think it's a judgment call. I took both Daisy and my daughter to the yard with me this morning and we called in to Waitrose on our way home - I knew we'd be quick and had J with me in case I got held up, so left Daisy in the car with all four windows cracked - parked in the shade. We were five minutes. I knew she'd be fine. Because I knew we would be popping in, and because I had someone with me I could send to the car to check on Daisy/let her out if the checkout lines were long, I felt comfortable and confident with my decision. I also didn't lock the car doors - never do if I leave the dog in the car. I wouldn't, though, have stopped somewhere much busier (Tesco, Sainsbury's, etc.) for a longer shop - I would have taken her home and done my shopping at another time.

It it's really, really hot, I don't take her to the yard at all (I don't leave her in the car when I'm at the yard) . . . ditto if it's really, really cold (she really feels the cold). The only time I ever leave her in the car is if I'm doing a quick pop-in somewhere or buying fuel . . . but a passer-by isn't to know that, right? They just see my dog in the car . . . and assume that I am a negligent owner.

I am not, for one second, condoning the behaviour of those who leave dogs in cars for extended periods of time on hot days . . . but I do think a measure of common sense needs to be applied here. Saying "all owners who leave their dogs in cars when it's hot are negligent" is like saying "all owners who don't insure their animals are negligent" . . . doesn't it depend?

Dons flame-proof armour and waits for onslaught.

P.S. A friend of mine once accidentally shut his mini schnauzer in his car . . . she jumped in when he was getting something out, he locked it and went to take a nap thinking she was in the garden . . . she died . . . he felt terrible. Was he negligent or was it just really bad luck?

I can't stand to see it.

I never put myself in the position where I have to leave my dogs in the car. It's not that hard really, just requires a little bit of forward thinking and/or the willingness to put yourself out a little IMO.

You can't compare 'not insuring an animal' and 'leaving an animal in a car'
My cat is not insured simply because there is no risk of her getting hurt by a car as she is a semi indoor cat that only goes out for short periods away from busy roads.

All I'm saying is both are blanket statements that don't take individual circumstances (yours included) into account. Generalizations are rarely helpful. Of course leaving an animal - any animal - in a car on a hot day for long enough to cause it medical distress is wrong . . . but to say that it is ALWAYS wrong is to negate the good judgment some dog/animal owners use . . . hence my post.

People need to realise dogs do not sweat in the same way humans and any other animals do! They can only cool them self down by panting and sweating on there pads. We see many dogs die every year because people just don't understand . even 10 min in a car with the windows all wide open and the sunroof open a car inside will reach 48 c when the temp is 22c out side. In hazy/ cloudy skys!
PLEASE PEOPLE DON'T DO IT! I FIGHT FOR TO MANY DOGS LIVES WHEN IT'S TOO LATE!!!!!

We were in Cornwall last September and stopped at a pub during a mini heatwave. The car parked next to us had a small dog on the front seat, two windows were open an inch but the windscreen was facing the sun !.

The pub garden was full but I asked every table if it was their dog, at the last table a woman said it was her car but there was plenty of air. I told her that the dog was very distressed and I was calling the police. She went and fetched the dog giving us a round of swearing.

What was brilliant was that she had to pass 20 or so tables and was given loads of verbal, glares, and tutting.

I have never been so stupid as to leave my dogs in a boiling car. The heat over the weekend has been oppressive and they have been left at home on journeys they would normally come with.

If I saw a dog distressed in a car I wouldn't wait for the police to arrive which could be forever ( god knows they seem to be shocking offenders at leaving their own dogs to die in cars )

I'd break the windows myself and sod the consequences . I'd hope someone would do the same for me if ever it happened but it wouldn't.

In this weather I even worry about driving with them in the car - it's just too hot.

Changing the topic slightly, don't any of these people worry about nasty folk stealing their beloved pooch from the car ( I know the heat is the main worry) - I know I do, and I would never leave them in a car unattended, or outside a shop.

It only takes a sec to steal a dog, and there are some b******ds out there!
