Had a "potential" livery turn up today.

As soon as she pulled up, she let out her dog..

I said.."would you mind putting your Dog back in your car..I dont allow Dogs on the yard"

She looked at me as if i was joking..so i repeated the above..

to which she retorted.." Didn't want to come here anyway"..got herself and her dog into her car and drove off!!

Nowt queer as folk, eh?

I fail to see where liveries "assume" they can bring a dog onto a yard.

:mad:Her loss, sounds as if you are better off without attitude like that.

I don't allow dogs either, it is basically the only rule I have.

I don't even let my own dogs out on the yard during the daytime when liveries might be around.

I love taking my dogs to the yard. I think it does the dogs and horses some good being used to each other.

but i was once at a yard where the owner wouldn't let you take the dogs, personally know i wouldn't go to a yard where my dogs weren't allowed to go because its part of my routine, and i take my dogs out hacking on quiet routes.

say that thou, some people have un-ruley dogs, and dont keep an eye on them, mine only come out when im poo picking, and taking the horses to the field, if im doing chores/riding etc, i leave them at home

How rude! For a start she didn't ask you if she could let the dog out. But there might of been horses/children/adults/ who don't like/are affraid of dogs.

We have dogs on the yard I work at, but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Agree with Enfys...would you really want her there with that attidude.

Theres a livery at our yard who's forever letting her terriers run around and has no control over them. The only time she ties them up is when the kids are on the yard (if you're lucky) because she had to be asked after one of them went for the YO's 3yo Granddaughter and she just carried on bringing them and letting them loose. (i've also had them in the school with me with out them making an effort to get them out, come haring down from the field where they'd p*ssed off to and up behind Blue and running around the horses legs when i've been trying to ride off the yard)

I like dogs, and I have no issues with them on the yard if they are under control. The majority of other liveries who own dogs leave them in the car and take them for walks after, with the exception of one who is only down during the day and occasionally takes her daft yet child friendly staffy, my sis who takes the in-laws dogs down when she's looking after them and makes them glue them selves to her side - if they run off they are on the lead, and me who takes a friends dog down to feed when i'm looking after it and he stays on the lead the entire time.

On my search for yards I've always asked if I can take my dog on the yard and respect the answer.
I've got a puppy and she thinks horses are dogs she can jump up at so for a while until she is a bit better trained and used to horses she will remain on lead.

Her loss!! I wouldn't allow it either - we have had problems with dog shite all over the yard and having our hay peed on - disgusting bloody things!! ( I know it's the owners not the dogs!!)

At my old yard, one of the other liveries let their dog around the front where one of my boys was tied whilst I was grooming him, and the boy I could see was squaring up to boot him...

so I went round and asked the bloke to grab his dog else it might end up dead...he muttered and grabbed it...

2 minutes later it was back again and I yelled for the bloke and guess what....? It went flying through the air, yelping...luckily no back shoes on me boy...

Bloke came round, right ding-dong, I pointed to the sign that said 'Dogs on lead at ALL TIMES'...he said I'd pay the vet bill...I said I'll see you in court......

Nothing came of it of course....

I insist that dogs are on leads at my place, they will get stomped on if they went in the paddocks.....ANd my dog is the only one not on a lead. She won't go up to the other dogs when I tell her, but if another dog apporached her that she didn't know, there wouldn't be much left of it!

My dog only off the lead? Of course! It's my yard! :D

To be honest when I ring about a yard one of the first questions I ask is "can I bring my dog?". If the answer is no then I say thanks but no thanks, I just prefer to have my dog on the yard. Especially as I now only work mornings I will be leaving my dog in one of my stables with a chew, a treat ball and a toy. That way he can have a run when I do the ponies in the morning and then he gets a good run when I am riding or doing chores after work. I think it's nice hacking out with my dog running beside me, it's also a good way to get my horses used to dogs for when we go hunting, or if we are out hacking and meet a dog walker. Besides the more exercise my dog can get the better!

Dont have dogs on my yard either, to much of a liability. Apart from the guard dogs that are loose at nights only, not even my house dogs go down there. Its a livery yard not a dog creche.

If people want to hack out with their dogs, then they bring them down, leave them in the cars, tack up, go out and take their dogs home. I have had enough of Dog*** everywhere, dogs on extended leads where liveries cannot get their horses in and out safely, dogs chasing horses, worst still dogs in stables when owners come in morning and turn their horses out, and leave them in the stables to bark all day when they are at work, rather than at home.

I allow dog - but only on leads, and under no circumstances are dogs allowed to be left in the stables while the owners ride or leave the yard. I am providing livery for horses not dogs and I hate dogs barking on the yard. I am happy for the liveries to walk their dogs in fields but I don;t want them loose on my yard. Any sign of agression to my dogs, any horses or the yard cat and they are not welcome again. My own dogs are allowed out without leads, but it is their home and they are totally horse and owner friendly.

At my old livery yard dogs weren't aloud as the yard owners dog was attacked when younger so gets very agressive around other dogs as he so scared he is going to be attacked. Then one day a livery came down and let her dog out  luckily yard owner dog was in but then my haynet was hung up on fence dripping (after being soaked) and i walked out of stables to do get haynet and then saw liverys dog lift leg up and PEE on my hay :mad: I was fuming so hat to chuck hay out and wash hay net but that didn't annoy me it was the fact that the dog shouldn't have been down there and if i didn't walk out when i did i would have fed that hay to my boy!!! x

My dogs are allowed at the yard I have the herd and is was the first question I asked when I went there. They are VERY friendly and don't bother the horses at all but they have always been around the herd from the first day they were allowed out in the big wide world.
As soon as I get to the yard the leads come off and off they go but they are never far away and come to call.
I don't think I could go to a yard that wasn't dog or kid friendly.

I think dogs and horses go well together - providing there is good behaviour and couretesy all round, and a good dollop of common sense is used.

I'd always ask about letting my dog out on anyone's property though. I mean, even if the dog is guaranteed to be well behaved there is no betting the horses will be, or that there aren't resident dogs who are defensive about their turf. My first horse was the loveliest of personnalities you could hope for, manners to dream of, but was scared of dogs (i think YO's dog nipping his heels had something to do with that!).. so if even the most well mannered dog went out of his sight behind him he would kick out.

Her attitude was tatally wrong, but i love having my dog with me.

I take her on hacks, it nice company and horses and dogs go together.
We have had problems at our yard lately (mainly the 5 farm dogs) but it means our dogs may be banned, im seriously considering moving yards after 10 years as it just wont seem right.

I too would ask before coming to look at a yard if dogs were allowed and would not consider going to a yard that will not. I have 2 staffies and spend a lot of time at the yard and a lot in the winter evenings on my own so I appreciate the company.

However, there are rules we have to follow. There are a lot of dogs at our yard, so no dog (with the exception of the YO 2 dogs) are allowed to wander around carte blanche. When I come up I check to see who is up there and what dogs are out before I take mine down the fields. It will also have a bearing as to how busy the yard is. Youngest staffie boy knows everyone and regards them all as friends so given a small window of opportunity will go off to say hello! so if I can't physically have the dogs with me/focusing on them, they go back in the crate in the back of the car. All the dogs on the yard are "horse" trained as well.

But someone letting their dogs wander around, peeing on hay, nipping the horses would be put to a stop pretty sharpish. And for someone just letting their dog out on a strange yard without checking first is an idiot. That is how major dog fights start.

I agree. Most of us on my yard have dogs, luckily we are all also considerate & use our common sense. The dogs are always kept out of the way while the horses are coming in or out, and generally not allowed to make a nuisance of themselves.

Once the horses are all sorted, and we are having a coffee, for example, it's lovely to see the dogs playing together & enjoying the freedom of being outside.

I would never dream of letting my dog out of the car on another yard without asking permission. And even then, I probably wouldn't ask unless I got chatting to the YO & could see other dogs already there.

We are a small yard though, I can see how it wouldn't work on a bigger scale with more dogs (and owners!) in the mix :)

dogs are allowed on my yard but they have to be under control. so far there haven't been any problems and if i take my dogs then they stay put on a lead.

i used to be on a yard where dogs were allowed and another livery allowed her dog to wander everywhere so it was pooing and weeing on the hay/straw, eating all the feed and also it was harrassing the horses in the stables and fields. because of that i've now got a pony that is very defensive when a dog is around.

I dont mind dogs coming onto the yard but they must be under control and owners need to appreciate that the yard is home to my dogs too. I have been surprised by occasional liveries' attitude that their dogs have priority. Considering that they are on the yard because their horses are kept here, not as a dogs playground, it can be annoying. Most liveries are a lot more sensible than that.

And that is usually the problem - inconsiderate owners spoiling it for everyone else........

I have just started taking my 2 labs to the yard, after checking with YO that it was ok. They are very well behaved and I keep a very close eye on them, make sure they stick close to me at all times and would never allow them to be a nuisance.

However at my old yard the YO had a collie that was a complete pain in the ass. It would herd horses at any oppotunity, when turning in or out, in the school, on the yard etc. It was a nightmare - hence I moved

We've generally allowed people to bring their dogs, but they have been a pain in the behind

One livery let her dogs cr*p everywhere and seemed to think the DIY price included me poop scooping after her dogs.

We actually asked her to leave in the end and the dogs were the driving factor

Our other liveries brought a lab which was fine, but annoying that it would pee on the hay (our dogs are girl terriers so don't do that sort of thing)

Livery does seem to often include an assumption of crèche facilities for dogs and children!!

I'm a dog lover, but not a dog owner. There are dogs living at my livery yard and they are well behaved around the horses. I think it has been good for the horses to become used to them.

Some other liveries have also brought their dogs along and, in general, these have also been well behaved. BUT I do not care for those who let their dogs run through my paddock; if someone's dog were to get kicked by my horse, I would not be held responsible. I also abhor the dog faeces that I find in my paddock, along the paths and in the manege.

I think it is the height of arrogance to assume that dogs are welcome anywhere - you are better off without people with such attitudes!

I have three dogs - and I *sometimes* bring one of my dogs that is particularly well behaved and rather popular with my friends. But I would never ever let him off the lead for his own safety as well as that of the horses/cats on the yard. It's still folks homes - and I would be highly annoyed if someone allowed their dog to run riot at my house!

The YO has a rule that dogs must be on leads - yet how many dogs come and aren't?! Having said that, the ones that do come are really well behaved and aren't exhibiting any antisocial behaviors (no cat chasing, no pooing / peeing etc).

Dogs are quite a familiar sight on our yard as the YO hires out the indoor to a local dog agility club every week-- but it tends to be THOSE owners (rather than the liveries) that exhibit the antisocial behavior - not picking up after their dogs messes, or leaving it bagged up on the drive way where they were parked!

I allow dogs on my yard (its only small so only one couple at the mo and possibly another livery in the future), but under the condition that they behave, whereabouts are known at all times and that they clean up after them should they make a mess. All my horses inc the very nervous exmoor are fine with dogs and I do think its good for them to mix. Also its good for my dog as its company for him, plus it knackers him out (2 yo staffie full of energy). The only time we've told someone off for their dogs and their behaviour was when she kept letting her dog eat my dogs food. She purposly didnt feed her dog and then let her's into the shed (on several occasions) and when I finally caught her in the act she was 'oh ...., thats naughty you shouldnt be in there' whilst stood watching the dog eat...

on the topic of horses and dogs, my farrier once told me that dog poo was very bad for a horses feet. obviously it would take alot of standing around in the poo but none the less it's not nice when you have to pick dog poo out of a horses hoof, i've had to do that a few times.

I dont take my dog to the yard - for one Im not allowed, as there are guard dogs on my yard who would take offence to my rather large puppy bouncing around. Hes a Malamute and my yard is surrounded by livestock - he would want to play, farmer nearby has already shot 2 dogs and Im not taking any chances of my boy vanishing across a field so he doesnt get to come with me unless he is on the leash and daddy comes too for a walk in the forrest.

I dont mind dogs at the yard as long as they are well behaved, on my last yard a few of the girls had dogs who were very good - my YO has a 4 month old jack russell and hes nuts, runs in and out of stables, under Arions legs, eats his haylage - just as well my horse is good with dogs really. He is only a pup though and YO is very quick to correct him - he will learn.....and hes so cute :D

I always ask about dogs, but in my experience there's nothing worse than horses and random liveries dogs, a recipe for disaster. But sometimes its good to know if you can bring your dog down, check your horse and go for a walk for example.
