I am told that I am unreasonable as I am not prepared to have dogs running around the yard, fields and neighbours private property.... Sadly had recently to ask a livery with 3 horses to leave as within 2 weeks of them arriving 3 neighbours complained about unruly dogs entering their land chasng cats, chooks and peacocks! I was 'mugged' by hooning hounds whilst bringing my own 2 in.

Before the label of dog hater is pinned to my nose, I have a dog, other family members have dogs. However, they are under control and never allowed to run wild and frankly, they are obedient.

Stables are for horses in my opinion and if one liveries a horse that does not mean a free for all play pen for dogs.

Am I grumpy?

No not at all ! I have a resonably well behaved dog that I couldtake to previous yard as there where only a couple of other liveries. However I have now moved to a new yard which is busier and he can't come but I completly undertsand why and if being able to take my dog to the yard was a major factor then I would move yards to somewhere he was allowed

I have a reasonably well behaved dog who does come up the yard with me. However he is ALWAYS with me, not allowed to wander off or be in anyones way/nuisence. It is a privildge for him to be up there, not a right. If the YO said no dogs, then it is their place and their rules go. No questions.

You're not grumpy. It's your yard, you can do whatever you like!

My JRT comes with me to the yard I currently rent with a friend so there is no problem as it is just us and only my dog. However I have liveried in the past on yards that do not accept dogs - not a problem - I did not take her. It is easier if I take her as it saves time collecting her afterwards for a seperate walk, but rules are rules and if you go to a no dog yard then you must abide by the rules. If you don't like it go somewhere else. simples:)

Unfortunate, and not at all unreasonable or grumpy in my book.

I think to avoid this you have to decide whether to implement a "No dogs" or at least some ruling about control of them so that it is perfectly clear where everyone stands. Loads of people have perfectly well behaved dogs but the odd few inconsiderate and irresponsible owners ruin it for others when you have to put your foot down.

I have a 'No dogs' policy at my barn. I have three dogs of my own (guard dogs so they are penned during the day) and canine trespassers would drive them nuts. I also have cats, goats, rabbits etc, etc plus Boarders and their children, 2 of my Boarders also have physical disabilities to consider so for the sake of harmony it is set in stone.

I have had people tell me they would love to Board here but won't because I won't allow their dogs to roam, no loss to me really in the grand scheme of things.

I have three dogs - however, when I have ever brought them to a yard, they've always been on a leash. My new yard doesn't allow dogs to come (they have their own dogs running tho). I don't see this as a problem. Their yard, their rules. I didn't get a horse because I wanted to entertain a dog!

my two german shepherds come to the yard with me - off the lead. BUT they are very well trained and well behaved. when walking down to fields i let them run but they dont go in other horses fields they sit at the gate of my field and dont move whilst i poo pick or catch horse. they dont go near other horses. they do have a sniff of the cats but the ones who arent feral love it and roll on the floor playing with them! they ignore the chickens and stay with me when on the yard.
If they werent as well behaved they would either stay on lead or on car - wouldnt dream of letting them run riot.
I also pick up their poo too!

I too do not think you are being grumpy.

I have seen chaos on yards when people have taken their dogs who run riot all over and have no control whatsoever, and then the pleasure of them cr*pping everywhere.

For the safety of all, I would exactly as you have, you are running a stables not a kennels/dog exercising place.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask someone to leave who has shown no consideration to you, your property, others and neighbours!

I can understand people saying "saves walking them later" - but then I have to question - do these people really have time for both horses and dogs?

One rule for all, regardless of how well behaved an owner may claim a dog is, then it saves an political hassle.

If the Yard owner chooses to have their dogs around THEIR home/yard, well that is their choice - although one would imagine them to be friendly/used to people & horses (given it could be a liability for an owner if not).

OP - you do the right thing, keep the peace to all and a safe place for all living things around.

Not at all I take my 15yr old as he doesnt get walks so he just potters about and normally is found asleep in the hay or my stable if I have been up for more than half an hour.

If I would take my other two up they would be on leads, and the only reason they would come up is if I was walking dogs and doing horse (footpath behind yard) I havent taken them up yet as I am new. So will leave it a while.

We've got sheep here: so anyone bringing dogs onto the place needs to (1) have it WELL under control and (2) clear up poop if necessary.

Certain other people in the neighbourhood think its just fine though to have theirs running free and coming into our place and turding in the paddocks, plus when you go past their they'll come out and because they're either too idle OR too indifferent to shut the bleddy gate, will scare the shite out of everyone else's dogs in the neighbourhood.

If anyone deserved reporting to the Dog Warden .......

Agree with you, you are running a livery yard not a doggy creche.
Frustrating when people think they can use other peoples facilities like this, you should have asked her where she lived and taken your dogs down to play in her garden, bet she wouldn't have liked that.

I keep mine on their own but whenever I have visited my dogs have been on leads (and I have taken poo bags so no one has to step in any deposits). So many people forget that not all horses are used to dogs and I have no idea why they expect others to be ok with them alllowing their dogs to chase their chickens... Rudeness.
