I know, again!

Yesterday we made our first non essential journey since lock down began and took the dogs down to a friends to use his river for training. He owns Griff, Ffee's brother. Griff is a lovely dog but...
Why do dogs have to rummage in bitches knickers until put on the lead? (or in this case until Pen gave him a pasting and he was put on a lead - her sassiness can be a plus). How do you stop them? It would be nice if they were able to walk to the training ground in a relaxed manner, having a sniff and a pee without having to be sex obsessed. His owner disproves my theory about dogs being like their owners as he is a really nice man.
And the leg cocking, it seems mean not to let them, I let my girls stop for a pee if they need one so should you just not let dogs mark? He had just come out of his kennel so he may well have wanted to go.

I'm asking as I do sometimes think about having a dog next time but then I think how much more straightforward girls are, bar twice a year.

We found when we had a mixed group that the dogs took no especial notice of the bitches except if they were in season. I would think that Griff was just getting to know your lot as newcomers to his home, in the way that canines do.

The trouble is mine would be workers, so constantly meeting new bitches and sometimes on a gun bus with them. It is something I feel really strongly about, I've been groped on the tube and it is truly horrible. Even accepting dogs don't feel quite the same about it as we do I hate a bitch sitting firmly down while being lifted up by a persistent dog nose. I don't mind them doing a polite bottom greeting sniff (not people on the tube, btw) but a proper rummage.

A lot of it is down to (in my experience anyway) management of the boys since young. I simply didn’t allow sniffing every blade of grass, leg cocking constantly, NO humping and any pushiness or obsessive pestering got the same response too.

My pair have always been really good. People are always shocked to discover they are intact as they don’t display any of the nonsense boy behaviour that I can’t deal with so much.

That said, the irony of ironies happened. When the corgi bitch came into heat, it was/is (we are at the end now!) the blue boy who was the issue. The blue boy is very low key, never cocked his leg, nothing—yet he’s whines constantly, drooled and foamed at the mouth and generally just been really irritating and a sex pest (spending hours meticulously peeing over every spot where her ladyship has been). I was really surprised as a)he’s never displayed any ‘male’ behaviours in his life and b) they know I don’t take this nonsense.

I think even with good management, which I think I have of my boys, there will always be times where their conkers call the shots. As a male I can say, the same can be said at times in we human counterparts too.

I do find bitches easier in many ways.

I am another who thinks it is down to training and management. I have had more males than bitches and have never had a male who was rude to bitches as you describe, because I definitely wouldn't allow it. Of course when there has been a bitch in season it is a different kettle of fish and they have to be kept separately.

We currently have 3 adult entire working male dogs, when working they work even with bitches being jn season when not working they get told to knock it off if they are persistent, they are allowed a sniff as it's dog manners to say hello but that's it.
All three dogs have been used as stud dogs too and still have manners.

Ok will take on all your points that it is not inevitable!
Also, dogs or bitches, when you are going training, so I had training vest on and was carrying a game bag, are your dogs really focussed on you? Mine are ridiculous to the point of insanity when we are walking out to train. Although they have to heel it is sideways/backwards/half pass. Include hysterical panting and eye contact to the point of pain (pick me! pick me! even when alone).
Griff just walked along totally disinterested in the dummy, no excitement showing at all. He does retrieve it and hunts well but just seems so laid back. Male or individual? TBH it is a lot more relaxing!

I didn't realise you meant to that extent! I thought you meant just normal greetings. Why did the owner allow it?

Sounds like a combination of a "boring" owner/trainer who maybe doesn't engage enough with his dog and the dog's individual temperament. Does he go up a few gears when actually working?

In my experience, bitches do seem to mature more quickly and therefore are switched on at an earlier age, but of course much will depend on genetics, owner engagement, individual temperament etc etc.

He does sort of go up a gear, but not how I am used to.
We always used to walk dog hound pups as they were more laid back and easier and I wondered if that was all males.

I am sure you get driven dogs as well as bitches, but of my current two my bitch is definitely more up for it and intense.

Always had dogs until I got married and switched to bitches about 40 years ago. I prefer their lack of distraction and more centered on me when training. We had a goldie dog who would fix on running off and no amount of yelling would get him back if he got far away a well aimed stone lobbed to distract him would get his attention and he would remember his re call and return but turning a deaf ear was his favourite pastime. The Newfoundland was just plain stupid and a clown to boot but he was a fabulous dog he just didn't get training

Mine will have a sniff but generally leave when told, he's very interested in bitches, but generally polite. He's not an avid leg cocker. He's pretty laid back unless there is a job to do. He really believes his job is to please me, be that game or dummies. He knows which shoes I wear, when, and once the training vest is on my wish is his command (no doubt he'll be a total arsehole and let me down, being a complete nob, next time you meet him) My other two boys are castrated, you really wouldn't want to consider their genetic material!

I’m going to say it’s individual. Mine are both neutered, but Bear is still a sex pest with young female humans! Zak isn’t allowed near other dogs so I couldn’t really say and he isn’t interested in being friendly with humans particularly. Jake and Brig were both entire and never really showed an interest in a bitch, I think Jake once looked a bit funny at a bitch, but a sharp no and he was on his way.

Id never have a bitch and I’m fairly determined to have a gelding again if the occasion arises.

All the entire dogs I've known have been a bit sex pesty or very boisterous (or both). I think the owners can't see the problem!
I've only ever had bitches, (I prefer the tinkle not sprinkle type) and most have been able to tell the dog where to go, but sometimes they work hard for it, and ask me to help? (So I shout at the owner).

I have always found girls more focused/intense in terms of anything training related. Boys, or at least all mine, have all been super chilled and ‘take it or leave it’. My current trio demonstrate this perfectly; when asked to do something the boys go along with it cause they know it’s the right thing to do, the girl wants to know why we’re doing it and could we do it a more effective way!

I've worked both, but collies, and I'd go for a dog 99% of the time cos I've found the bitches to be a bit huffy if you have to give a sharp or strong command (agility). A bit "well if you're going to speak to me like that you can get stuffed", where the boys have always just got on with it.

That said my husband has a bitch and if i could get one like her I'd have one tomorrow!

The bigger hunts used to hunt bitch packs and dog packs on seperate days and it was always said the bitches need a decent pro hunting them as they soon lose faith if you get it wrong and don't like being overcorrected. (My OH says just like me). The dog packs could be taken out by an amateur or less experienced person as they were more forgiving.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Suppose to some extent when you're working a dog 1-1 most people will just naturally gel with one sex more than the other, same as with people.
