Does anyone have a Dogue? I have had two and I really do miss having one around. One I adopted from a rescue and the other I bought from a Crufts breeder. My breeder puppy was one amazing boy and I dearly miss him. So was my adopted boy he just had some issues with socializing as he was an old boy and quite set in his ways.

Just wondering if anyone shares my love for them and if anyone has any good pictures? :-)

As I've never seen such a dog in the flesh, and 'saw' my very first on a passing telly-glimpse at Crufts, I have to say that I'm staggered. If such a breed of dog was 'created' today, and by those who this forum and others, quite rightly slate as designer breeders, then the result would be uproar.

So what do we have? We have a breed of dog which seems to have a life expectancy of some 5-6 years, with the record, apparently being 12 years, we have a dog with in built problems which include a badly deformed jaw, obvious breathing problems, a dog with a lower shoulder height than a croup height (and in any animal, THAT is a deformity). We have a dog, which at best, would be called 'pedestrian'.

Whilst we buy Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekinese, and Dogues, amongst a very sad list which is extensive, then we are encouraging breeders and breed societies with their often appalling 'Breed Standards', to continue as they are.

The average 'Designer Breeder' doesn't actually create the freaks which many of our exalted, established and revered 'conventional' breeders manage.

Turtlebay69, it isn't you who I'm having a pop at, it's those who breed in inherent problems, and create freaks, and best of all, do nothing to change things.

Alec.

As a footnote, this thread didn't really seem to be going anywhere, so if I've put it to sleep, it will hardly be a loss!! a.

I take it you've not seen the film Tuner & Hooch then Alec

I meet one out with my dog, he is lovely - very playful and loads of fun - just huge, a real Alice in Wonderland moment!

We've got one living next door, don't like it at all. She's very fear aggressive and absolutely huge. One day she broke through the gate by accident and then looked to me coming for me, luckily my plucky little patterdale took her on and she retreated.

You can't judge an entire breeds disposition by one owner's failure to raise a well rounded-dog.
I've been lunged at by a terrier but I wouldn't condemn your patterdale.

The 3 Dogues I've known have all been lovely dogs. But I must echo what Alec has said.. The life expectancy says everything for me, sadly.

I've known 2, they were sisters and were lovely dogs. Very friendly and affectionate.

Re the breeding of them, half the dogs at Crufts tonight were a joke. The dachshund which the commentator described as a dog that would go to ground had no legs! The smooth one actually looked deformed and half of them were way too fat.

I was just looking for pictures really. I find them fascinating. The life expectancy is low, yes, but mine both lived until almost 10. It does not put me off owning a dogue as I know the years they spend with me will be happy ones, and that is all that matters to me.

I heard a local breeder that was breeding despite knowing that her bitches had a hereditary condition involving the womb, both bitches have since died very young.

Well that is just irresponsible and the same as any breeder producing from a faulty bitch no matter the breed.

I've known a couple of Dogues and they were both lovely, real characters. I think if we're honest it's not just bullbreeds or squashy nose dogs who have faults, Although they always come in for criticism what about Bassets whose small legs have to carry huge bodies or Dachunds with really long backs as just a couple of examples.

Most large breeds have shorter life expectancy than small breeds even Great Danes who have no breathing issues. I have a British bulldog and he is happy and healthy, they aren't all freaks .

Things like spaniels , lurchers etc leave me cold so ill have to go with my bullbreeds , Dogues , etc as they are the only dogs I like .
