My riding is more than up to scratch for the initial stages of BHS exams, however, I've heard a lot about 'doing it the BHS way'...

I don't really wanna book stable management lessons, if i can at all avoid it. Just wondered if anyone could reccomend a book that'd talk you through this ' BHS way' of doing stuff.. or am i really going to have to have SM lessons?

I can do all the stuff on the syalabus with my eyes closed, just need to brush up on feedstuffs really.. but don't want to fail my exam because I don't do it thier way

Thanks

basically just think before you do anything would health and safety be happy about it, if so then you are fine, there are little things like always remove water buckets from stable before you groom, tack up etc, or when brushing horses head undo quick release knot leave the rope through the baler twine, then put headcoller round neck, just be ultra 'safe'
basically, take 3 times longer than normal

It all sounds so backwards in coming forwards, but I'm not going to be able to teach without them..

Unless there is an alternative way of teaching without BHS quals?

if you look at the photos in the exam books, then you will see the bhs way!
hacking jackets and hats at all times!!
things like tying up tacked up horses in stables and tying up martingales..
what about trying to visit the exam centre where youll take your exam on a test day..just watch?if it takes you an extra ten minutes to do then thats the BHS way..lol

Oh, I'm not looking forward to this AT ALL!!

Anyone in Lancs want to take me in hand and show me? lol.

Removing your water buckets before grooming?

Madhector,
"remove the water buckets from the stable before you groom"

why do you have to do that, sorry i am totally curious as to why the BHS examiners think a horse having water in the stable to drink needs removing while you groom, or is it so you don't trip over the bucket??????

It's so you don't get dust or dirt from the horses coat in the water!

If you want to pass I really do suggest you book not only the SM but also the riding sessions as well.

They really are very rigid about what they want and it would pay you to get coached properly through both parts of the exam and the procedures they are after.

Its a pain but as you say, you will need them if you want to teach.

that is proberly the reason

Lol! That's what the teacher that we had for stage 1 and 2 told me anyway!! Makes sense though, but a bit of a waste of time really!! But then this is the BHS...

the bucket thing is also if the horse throws a wobbly (when you have tied it up and you are wearing your hat for protection and poss these days body protector too!) the horse doesnt kick the bucket and injure itself. physically speaking of course

Sounds like its going to be fun.. lol. Sarcastic moi? Never.

Spaniel- I'm already having ridden lessons, and apparantly my ridings well up to standard.. so Its just the nitpicky stable stuff that I need to know the BHS way as opposed to my own way.. looking like I'll be looking for SM lessons this week

*Ugh*

Mad Hector, if you can be bothered to type it all out.. I'd love that! Thank you

It's about being safety conscious and aware of your surrondings.

IE: you're putting a rug on a horse you dont know. You dont do what most of us do when rugging up - fling it on and do it up. BHS way, you could fold it properly then place on shoulder, unfold, unfold again

Feeding wise - it's not that bad, they'll stop you once you've filled their criteria (I got told to stop when I had my feed sample)

Might be worth having a quick nosey at the books, especially the SM book or the course companions. Don't buy them, get them out the library, my uni library even has them.

But if you've never done the "BHS way" might be worth even a couple of lessons on the SM/theory side. It can be a bit alienated at times.

Its a bit like taking your driving test- you have to drive a certain waysuch as how you hold the steering wheel-
If you are self taught or have your own horses you will have developed fasted ways of daoing jobs that works well for you.
The thing i always remember from stable managment is that you have to tie up the horses every time you go in the stable-which in reality you really dont do.
Also taking water and hay out when grooming or skipping out!
