So it's boiling here 20ish degrees again so tootled down the field with water and suncream for pink noses ;) dolly comes up sticks her muzzle in my hand and practically applies the suncream herself before happily allowing me to rub it in. I then used the watering can to cool Tess of before putting fly spray on her and dolly once again trots over and stands under where the water is running of Tess pulling an "ahhhh face" :D so very gently poured some onto her and her lips were wobbling stood like a rock for it to be poured all over her clearly enjoyed it before regaining energy and galloping about :o . Anyhow Tess threw a tantrum for her suncream and did the worst rears hot maybe all of 2cm off the floor ? But stuck her head up eventually she gave in but how do yOu find the easiest way to get a horse used to suncream is ?

Thanks
Abbiex

Love the picture you paint in my mind of Dolly. My mare still thinks suncream means death so I put her headcollar on and gently come in from the side. My youngster I also use the headcollar just for ease. Every horse is different, it is part of the joy of owning a pink nosed coloured.

Haha that made me laugh :D and you posted about dolly... Without pics?! ;)

My coblet doesn't like anything, so I tend to have a carrot in one hand and sun cream in the other which seems to work :) same with fly spray, leg brushing, tail spraying, mane pulling... The list goes on my my cobbie ;)

She just doesn't care about anything ! Loves bags (hay is carried in an ikea bag) little toe rag stole it and ran away !! But no she is just so cool about everything :D yes I do use a headcollar and sing to keep us both calm she does a lot of snorting before going meh .. But at 10 will this just be her one down side ? Thank you for the advice :)

I tried the handful of pony nuts in one hand and slather suncream on schnozzle with the other...usually had some success! Dolly sounds like such a character!

My big horse used to have those nose strips when he was eventing and pulling them off must be like having a plaster pulled off! - Very painful, so you can't get near his nose.

I use a very old leather headcollar with a nose net on (sun protection ones are about £10), works perfectly, no arguements and no worry about him rubbing it off, or reapplying on really hot days. But no idea whether that's sensible with a foal around !!

It is always less scary to do something yourself than to have someone do it to you.

I did this as a demo last year (my horse doesn't need sunscreen as no white bits, so has never had it applied before). He does understand to touch his nose to a target, and that he will get a reward for doing it, so I coated the target (paper plate) with sunscreen and off we went.

Re sun cream. Cream ready in one hand (as in squirt some cream into your palm) treats in the other. Give treat and do a lovely little caress/ tickle with the other hand as she's eating. Works every time with mine and he goes nuts if he sees the bottle!

well my mare is 19 this year and still hates the suncream! I have to hide it unless she's tied up, as if she ses the bottle she scarpers!

I always just head collar and slap it on, no fussing. She doesn't like it, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't like sunburn either!
