i need something completely waterproof for torrential downpours, but lightweight enough for riding in during summer!

i love my equidry(s), but i can’t cope with the back flap ending up under my bum when i’m schooling!

needs to be lightweight enough for warmer weather too, but not the sort of material that clings to you if you sweat/get rained on…i’d rather layer up in winter, i get very warm schooling anyway so not worried about that part - i wear my equidry for hacking when i’m colder from all the walking😂

It isnt realistic to have just one coat for both winter and summer. I have a Berghaus light anorak which I wear to ride in summer rain. In winter rain I just wear my Musto jacket. I own a long Dryzabone mac but I havent worn it recently. I dont like riding in it and the current share mare hates anything lying over her hind quarters.

I don't buy specifically horsey waterproofs because it costs £££ and usually isn't brilliant quality*. If it's really soggy I wear my single-skin Mountain Equipment waterproof to ride in, it has double zips so doesn't catch on the pommel, and a nice long back to keep the top of my bum dry. For colder winter weather I have a super stylish (NOT) PortWest women's site wear hi viz coat.

*with the notable exception of my DoPo Coats waterproof skirt, but those are handmade to order rather than a mass produced brand

I think I have 4 in my car at any one time!
Showerproof lightweight summer regatta coat 5k waterproof. When you can't decide if it will rain or not.
Lightweight dare2be 30k waterproof coat to pair with racing waterproof trousers. Add a gilet if it's cold.
Long riding equetech Mac 20k waterproof
Thick bum length Musto 5k waterproof but cold wet weather. It's about 12 years old and still going strong!

I have no boot space in my car as it's literally crammed with coats.... but I have a paranoia about wrong coat/wrong weather and a lot of friends are very grateful for my coat obsession.

I have a Berghaus which is pretty lightweight. I also have a Pro Viz (high viz) running jacket which is really good for hacking.

I have a couple of softshell jackets which are fine for light rein to but also make good under layers in winter.

For general riding & yard stuff, I think I'm going to get an short Reincoat - I have two long one's but when it's not actually raining (or freezi g cold for my wi ter version) they are a bit faff to ride in I find.

Ditto the DoPo riding skirt too.

this is me, all 3 equidry’s are in the car plus numerous jackets - and then i realised i don’t have a short one that’s waterproof and not just water resistant!😂 will have a nosey at these, thankyou:)

i’ve got waterproof chaps for the bottom half because i’m determined to stop being so soft this winter, but i did think about a skirt first! picked them up from a horsey car boot so got a good bargain for them haha

Another one I'd reccomened but havent had them ages so not sure how long lasting but as a budget waterproof The Ariat Spectator
I got one the winter before last for dog walking and then bought this last winter as it was on offer andI really liked the first one. Decent pockets and hood that actually stays up- I've worn it in somw awful weather and stayed dry. I dont think I've ridden in it though and its slightly longer than the short Reincoat so may need hitching up a little (or may have zips, Ive not noticed!) I love this for yard work and dog walking though. Light and easy.

as i’ve got 3 equidry’s i have debated getting a short one of those, but i’ll have a look at the reincoat too!
I have both the Reincoat Air and the Equidry short one that goes over your head (looks like a hoody), which I can't remember the name of. Both are great, but the Equidry is warmer, as it has a light fleece (more like velour) lining. Equidry do a lightweight one too (two actually - one's a pac a mac). To be fair, the main reason I ended up with the Reincoat was that I needed it quickly and they had them in stock at Eland Lodge, so I could get one without having to wait for a delivery.

I got the absolute s***ts when we had the wettest season in 80 years and ordered a Jack Murphy coat from Ireland. I love the lining, the breathability and the weight. Great fit also.

Had an ELT riding coat which was useless if you actually got rain, Drizabone too hot heavy and smelly.

yes would definitely get the mesh lined, i have both in the long version and i’d be cooking if i got the thin lined one!

really tempted by the pac - a - mac version, i think it would be fab for farm rides etc as it can be strapped around your waist! going to have a look at them at HOYS next week:)

I feel validated by this post. 😁

I haven't ridden in my Reincoat yet (you can thank me for the nice weather in Surrey at the moment), but it was certainly waterproof in the field. I would go for a short one if you don't want the flaps (but people on the yard have them and don't seem to sit on the flaps). The best short coat I ever had was actually a Joules one, but it was a few years ago, so the quality might not be the same.

I have a weatherbeeta kyla that I've owned a few years now and I don't mind it that well but I rode in it the last day when it was pouring down and I was kept nice and dry. Really rate those coats.

bought my mum one of these for xmas after she was drooling over my saddle fitters, but i think it’s probably a bit too warm!

Think this is what I got, lovely coat, warm and opening at the back for riding in, BUT it is not waterproof, somehow the water ends up on my arms/wrists

Walking daily often in horizontal rain, only ones I've found that coped were coats made with Gortex. Don't ask me what it is! Think mine are Berghaus, (but they have to be the Gortex ones)
