Stupid search function just keeps telling me 4x4 is too short and that I can't search for it

So, what is the most economical 4x4 for two horses? I don't have mega bucks to spend (really only 3k or so :( so am struggling)

I guess realistically I'm going to need around 2.5 tonnes of payload to do it comfortably.

Parkers tells me the TD Sante Fe tows 2.3 but is that just a lie? Apparently that has official fuel consumption of 37mpg.

Other thoughts are the Shogun Sport or well, I don't know what else

Would like mileage to be reasonable so official figures of 25+ as I know I won't get that!

Suggestions?

Landy :D If you want good fuel consumption then a disco with LPG conversion would be a good bet and no worries about pay load then.

Very specifically if you can get your hands on a discovery 200tdi, not the 300 and not the td5. It doesn't have all the modern trickery to pull the mpg down just to reduce emissions and we are comfortably getting 35+mpg out of it whilst not towing. They all tow 3.5 tonnes.

Shoguns are lovely but couldn't stomach the 20 mpg they commonly do.

Have to be careful cos given the age they can get a bit rusty however don't know where you live but land ranger sell used ones and they don't sell lemons. Have a word with them?

Oh and if you want any looking at let me know my mate works for land rover and is a bit obsessed with them so can tell you all the bits that are likely to cause problems.

thanks dh, I have a mate there too (but in the midlands so too far to be of any use!) so may take you up on that! :)

OH will throw a fit if I buy a Landy (not the biggest fan) but I won't rule them out!

I have had a discovery 200tdi and it was good and not thirsty at all as i used it as a work car for a while. just make sure you check it as they can rot and rust. mine had 140,000 on the clock when we brough it for around £3k and we sold it a year later for £3.5k and had to put a new tyre on it thats it and it had done 15,000 in that year. I now have a SWB isuzu trooper 3ltd which towes 3.3 tonnes and is lovely. has a bit more luxuries but again been very good. NEVER gets stuck. i tow a ifor HB506 with my 16.3 wb and friends 17hand tb up hills no worries.

Sorry, quick cheeky bump :o

The other option is for OH to buy a new car, me to take his (1.4 Ibiza) and have a fourtrak or something as a third car.

but the thought of an extra lot of tax, servicing, insurance is a bit scary. How much do you reckon I'd save in petrol using the Ibiza over a 4x4? Enough to justify 3 vehicles or not?

Izzy does about 45mpg on a long run and my commute is 60 miles a day? Seems to me that unless I buy a monster truck I'm going to be better off just having a 4x4 and sucking up the cost of petrol?

I think you mean 2500 towing capacity (total weight of horses plus trailer)

Payload is the weight put into the trailer so 2500 would be about 5 horses

Sorry ROG :o That is what I meant yes!

God forbid that I would have 5 horses. I can't think of anything worse! I don't even want the two I have!! :D
