Can anyone tell me if they know of anywhere in Yorks I can get hold of a donkey of pair of donkeys?
Ideally not too expensive as its for a pets corner at our farm so that local children can come along and learn about different animals.
I know of sales ect that i could go to but just wondered if there was anywhere or anyone that rehomes them (maybe from the beaches ect) were not looking for a pedigree donkey or anything like that so am quite happy to give a needy donkey a home.
Thanks

The Donkey Sanctuary are probably the best place for you to contact.

They will insist that you take on a pair as Donkeys don't like to be on their own (except for our old one but he was an excpetion to all the rules!)

Oh, there was an ad in the Yorkshire Post a few weeks back where someone was selling 20 ex beach donkeys and some foals. They were in the Yorkshire area but i don't know where. I will have a look and see if can find a back copy at home still - not sure if they keep back copies of ads on line on the YP saturday website.

I do not believe the donks advertised in the YP were all they were meant to be, as minor details like passports and what beach they had been on were not known about.
I second go to the donkey sanctuary, you and the home will be checked and you have to do a basic donkey handling course. Then they will do regular checks to see that all is well. They are very helpful with any problems you may encounter and can be contacted during work hours for anything.

Most donkey sanctuaries seem to have very long waiting lists or have stopped rehoming for the time being. When we were looking for a donkey last year as a companion for my boy it was an absolute minefield. Lots of unscrupulous people shipping from France or selling young, unhandled and neglected donks - all very sad.

Have a look at the forums on the Donkey Breed Society website, there are some great people on there who might be able to help. One of them pointed me in the direction of a reputable dealer and she even transported my donk for me all the way from Shropshire to Cornwall, so you never know.

You will need two if you don't have an equine chum for them, they do normally get lonely and depressed if they are on their own although of course there are exceptions. They are lovely creatures, full of character and affectionate. Good luck with your search and feel free to PM me if you need any advice.

How's he doing Bertie-boo? Mine has turned into the most wonderful little girl.

The devon Donkey Sanctuary are not letting any donkeys out on loan at the moment. There are smaller donkey sanctuaries up and down the country, and all horse/pony charities have donkeys in at times. My best advice would be to look on the DBS website, maybe join and ask specifically. There are a good few members with 'inside' knowledge who PM people so other members do not realise just how good they are.

Thanks for comments guys, already been in touch with donkey sanc. they only advised me to ring the guy at selby who was advertising in the YP also but said that he may only want to loan me some for winter. I was definately looking to get two and will prob, go to the sales or buy one private but like i said before because its for a kiddies petting farm they dont have to be pedigree and rescued donkeys would do the job just the same.
May well be contacting you BB for info once we get something in mind.

Hey you, how's things?! Glad to hear she has turned out so well, I'm very pleased for you. How are your other 2 girls doing? Dilbert is fine and dandy thanks. We moved house just before Xmas and so he and the hairy one are at home now so I can spy on them out of the window - great fun!

We bought our donkey from the sales and he defo was in need of a good home - poor fella.
He was £450 but it was money well spent as he gives us hours of pleasure just watching him 'being a donkey'!
