Donnington Grove vets, anyone used them?
A friend is possibly having her pony referred to be MRI scanned, her vet has not been able to find exactly why it goes lame at times, it has been xrayed etc and the vet has suggested that this may be the only way to do so, waiting to find out whether the insurance will pay as it is lots of ££s
She is also worried about leaving him overnight as he gets very stressed by being stabled but it seems too far to go in one day travelling 2.45 each way to get there and a very early start when loading can be an issue.
She has asked what I would do and thought this may be the best way to get other opinions as I have no idea what I would be doing if it was mine.

Mine was there for 3 nights and the care she received was excellent. You'd assume that with horses passing through all the time the yard staff would be quite distant and refer to the horses as 'that brown one in the corner' but no, they obviously cared for the horses and got to know them all.
 
There was an article about them in the Newbury Weekly News a few weeks ago. One of the inpatients in their care got loose and escaped from the premises. After a jolly around the local golf course the horse fell into the river got stuck and had to be rescued by emergency services and specialist rescue team. Apparently all ended well. They are a fairly large practice, so obviously lots of good reccomendations and a few bad stories, same as any really
 
Just to add, unless its changed, I think you'll find he'll have to stay overnight or two due to the radioactive material he'll be injected with for the scan.
Lovely yard and stable facilities, especially the stables for the patients in for bone scans as they have heaters in them, they need to be nice and warm before the scan.
 
Sorry - I'm giving you information for a bone scan and just re-read your post and noticed its an MRI scan your friends horse is having!
They didn't have that scanner in my days there, so have no idea on how it works :-/
 
Great practice. My mare had a MRI scan there last year. She had to be there for 8.30am and they said I could pick her up at 6pm, but they rang me about 3pm and said everything had gone so well that I could pick her up.

I had a chance to see the scans and have it all explained to me by their senior vet.

The stable staff where very nice and helpful.

You will be in good hands.
 
Great practice, a mare from work was up there for 2 weeks for AI and was looked after like a princess.

Got her home and she was a bit put out - where are my amazing shavings banks and kisses from nurses???
 
Great practice, my mare has had to stay there a couple of times, and each time has been very well looked after.

They were especially wonderful when her 4 week old foal had to be PTS there, can't fault them at all.
 
Not my usual vets but my horse got referred there In 2011.

I can't fault anything they did, horse was well cared for and the stable girls where always updating me and telling me what they were feeding etc. vets all very approachable, unfortunately my boy never came home but they all went out of there way to make sure he was well cared for till the end.

Our boy was in there last week for x-rays ,nerve blocks and a MRI. they were excellent with him. MRI was quoted to be a starting cost of £1000. with every thing they did it just over this. We are with the NFU and they pay for every thing except 50% of the livery. Well worth getting him up the evening before. In fact we had a transport company take ours and we picked him up due to working hours. They have to be in by 8.30am if going in on the day. Good luck with it.
