cos he has had a rider on him!!! He looked soooooo proud of himself!!
I had him on a lunge line the first time we tried and just walked right next to him around the school. last night we started off the same with me moving away from him until he was walking a 20 metre circle with me in the middle. its all a bit hit and miss cos we dont really know what we are doing, so how many times do we do this before trotting?

Well done! It's a great feeling isn't it!

IME just go with what feels right for you and the horse. there's no time limit. I like to make sure my brakes are working before I ask for the next gear but other than that I just do it when it feels right.

Good luck!

Oooo no its not me getting on him! I think he might look very very squashed and bow legged if I did, he is 12.2, I am nearly 6 ft and rather....shall we say, generously covered!!!

the pics are on OH phone! and I am at work, not actually meant to be on H&H. I will put them on tonight....I promise!!!

Well, we had a nother go tonight!1 he was so good, Elli got on from the ground this time, and he was as good as gold. we then walked round on a 20 metre circle on both reins for a few mins, then had a trot! he was so good, beginning to walk on without voice aids, just a squeeze of leg! So so proud!
And I did promise pictures, so here you are!

he looks great. nice size rider youve got for him....this stage is very important for youngsters, so take your time and listen to him. he does look very relaxed in the pics so you must be doing something right. i backed my 16 hand youngster myself and just had my friend to hold her etc and everything went fine. i read lots of books and had already done loads of groundwork with her so she took everything in her stride. so although getting help from someone experienced is preferable, as long as you are sensible and take your time im sure you will be ok.....:D:D

Yup, very very chuffed! I can really see now why all the ground work is so important.
last night he actually trotted around the school so not being lunged! There were a couple of times I did think he was gonna break into canter, but Ellie, the rider just made sure she kept her hands still as we think maybe thats moving on a bit too quickly! But he is being so so good, and he knows it!!!

Awwwww look at the little fella all grown up :D He's soooooooo sweet.
Just take your time. Theres no egsact sience to backing a pony. Once he has mastered one step move on to the next. If he finds it hard or gets upset just go back a step to settle him down then try again when he is calm. :) Hope that made sence
He's such a dude I bet he'll just take it all in his stride.
