Hi,

I've got a 19 month old yearling, who has always been good at picking up his feet...front and hind.

Untill Monday. Hes started to cow kick whenever i get near his feet. I think he's got the start of mud rash or cracked heels, but whenever i get below his knee/hock he kicks out untill i let go.

I dont know what to do as i obviously need to get close to them to see if anything is wrong and i dont want to frighten him with him being so young!

Please help!!!

You need a brave helper, one holds one of his front legs out whilst you check the back and vice versa, although I've seen my own filly kick whilst on 2 legs, I had a hold of the front leg at the time and I managed to support her well enough but she did go down and spent the next 30 seconds wondering why the hell she was on her knees, then she got back onto her 4 feet under her own steam. She must have given herself a fright because doing anything with her hooves and legs since has been easy.
But normally that leg taken away does work with most horses.

Same filly clonked me on the jaw with one of her hinds at 18 months, despite expecting problems, ducking and diving doesn't work ;)

Sedalin?
You have my sympathy

when i worked on a yard breaking in youngsters a good trick was to get an exercise bandage, put it round the front of the leg then criss cross it it, then use that as a lever for when you pick up their feet, they are free to kick out etc but you have control and can always get it back? I've probably not explained this very well...

ahh i will go and try and draw a picture on paint! haha will pm you once this master piece is done! The whole idea is that they can mess about but you don't let them put it down and the bandage is stretchy enough to ensure they don't get hurt :)
