For the last 2 years now my 20 yr old horse has had a really crap coat. I clip him in he winter and then the summer coat that starts coming through is hideous!!! It does come nice eventually (last year his coat came good about late July) I have had him tested for Cushings it was negative. He is also so itchy and gets scurfy easily. I'm at my wits end

What do you feed him? Good coat comes from the inside, oil helps. I've also found the less you groom, the better, and the sooner they can go out without rugs the better too.

Micronised linseed....half to full mug a day, works wonders for their coat and hooves ...do you clip for riding purposes? If not try clipping in mid Jan, bath as soon as it warm enough, that can help...but the linseed is the thing

Any reason not to clip him/part clip him now if he is uncomfortable?

For the first time in a few years my 23 yo didn't get a full clip in Feb as he had a broken foot so kept his blanket clip. I'm sure he will finish loosing his bum at some point! He has just about managed to get to behind his saddle now.
