I'm really worried about my mare, have been saying for a while 'she not right' but couldn't pin point anything.

Last weekend, hacked out and she felt like she was arching her back and walking like a banana around my inside leg. I can only describe her gait as 'measured' not free flowing as is her norm.

Had vet out, had chiropractor (vet approved) out. Both have noted she is uncomfortable around her girth area. Sound when trotted up.

She has also developed some oedema under her belly and a sizeable hard lump which is more to the near side than centrally under her belly.

She is very quite and isn't rolling in the field very much (once in the past two weeks) which is unusual. Funny walk is now happening without saddle.

Temperature is normal and she is eating as normal. She is a cob x WB and has always had access to ad lib hay and at least 8-10hours turn-out daily.

So we are off to the vets on Monday for some scans, starting with ovaries, then will look for ulcers, then I don't know what.

Thinking back she has been quiet and not marching out, usually very forward going. I put it down to the warm weather we had before Christmas- perhaps it was.

Tea and biscuits to anybody who got this far.

Rather worried that it may be something nasty and don't like to see her like this.

Poss ulcers but the swelling under her belly doesn't fit I wouldn't have thought xx good luck let us know how you get on xx

Thanks for asking...she had her scan, not on her ovaries but on the lump under her belly. She has a big tear to the outer abdominal muscle, about 6cm long. No wonder the poor love was so uncomfortable it must have been really painful.

Vet was brilliant, knew straight await where the problem was. Mystery is how she did it. Vet said theses muscles are really strong, so it must have been a significant something...who knows with horses!

Anyway she is buted up and I have an anti-inflammatory gel to apply, 6 weeks rest (thankfully can go out if quiet (ha ha) and then re-scan.

Vet suggested she stayed on Oestress to keep her more comfy and hopefully calmer.

This mare likes to come up with unusual injuries! But I'm pleased we know what it is as I can't bear to see them out of sorts and now we can help her. I adore this mare, she is very special.

How interesting. The only thing I would think of would be a possible casting over night, but if there was nothing unusual in her box to be seen that probably didn't happen. Or maybe a big skidding incident in the field with her legs going in opposite directions.

Well mid January she did have an almighty hooley in the field, pulled a shoe and trashed what little grass was left. Time wise it would fit in.

Don't think she's been caste, but difficult to say as stable had rubber floor and half up wall. I use pellets so not much bedding to suggest difficulties.

She is difficult in so much as she doesn't show obvious signs of pain. I know she is uncomfortable in some way when she does this little shake/flick of her ears...

Now just got to try to keep her from having any more hoolies whilst the muscle heals!

Silly post, but didn't think I would ever say this...I'm overjoyed that, my mare rolled in the field today!

Only one side, but there was mud on her face, so she must be feeling more comfortable.

She has been so quiet, off her hay and moving so carefully - just wish I could make her pain go away.

I wasn't so please to see that the old boy had followed suit and wast plastered with thick mud all around his ears and eyes...I've left it on as I'm sure it will wash off tomorrow.

That's good news she must be feeling better, the mud will dry and brush of, chances are you've got a semi automatic self cleaning horse and most of it will have gone by tomorrow anyway lol
