Two ponies in trotting traps cantering past our house, towards a notorious, steep, narrow hill which winds up to the nearest village. It's the hottest, most humid day in years.

I was actually lying on my bed for a rest, it's pretty draining this heat. I heard clattering of hooves and loud music, and stuck my head out the velux in time to see the second of the ponies and traps cantering by, closely followed by a white van. Clearly young, bony and angular bay pony with a dead straight back, (2 yr old??) cantering fast after the first trap. Lad in a the trap, fag, loud music, whether from the van or trap I don't know. Watched them reappear in the distance as they headed up the hill, which I can see to the first bend. I actually feel haunted by the awfulness of what is happening to those ponies right now. If the poor buggers have made it to the top they'll be absolutely exhausted and overheated. Why, FGS???

ETA. It's 29 degrees here.

heartbreaking to see. We had one collapse and die near here a few years back on an organised pub crawl they did. They then basically legged it and left the poor thing for the police and RSPCA to deal with. No doubt no prosecutions came about either. Makes me so cross and sad for the horses. I have one who was used for this purpose. Poor mare has literally been ragged into the ground. Was full of worms, absolutely terrified. She is now slowly improving but it should be stopped. There is a particular group who think this is ok to do and it's all about speed and money. They don't give a damn for the welfare of the poor horses. I've seen horses with eyes removed and other serious injuries that have eventually resulted in them being put down and still it continues. I feel for those who are often tarred with the same brush who actually do genuinely care for their horses but get tarred because of this particular group of people being of a similar background.
