Door/nail protection

My little hound sometimes digs at the door when I'm out. She's always done it, she does have a bit of separation anxiety and at 14 it's as good as it will get.
A couple of times recently she's made her nails sore as a result and obviously it's an exposed nerve and very painful.

I've got to be realistic/practical, we've worked a lot on the SA but never cured it and I need as a priority to stop her hurting herself.

I was thinking about getting a metal door protector, I can get something that will come about halfway up the door, which should be enough to cover the area she can reach, do we think it will work though - my theory is it's smoother than wood, and limits the possibility of splinters etc in the nail.

Open to better ideas if anyone has any, or thoughts on this?

I had a rescue lurcher years ago who would obsessively batter any door down when I was out (Talisker for any folk who have been around a long while!) - I tried covering the door with wire and he simply did more damage to himself ripping it off.

I’m sure you have tried this but the rescue charity suggested leaving him loose when we were out, it worked perfectly - he never touched a thing, was immaculately clean and very chilled

@The Fuzzy Furry i think carpet might still be enough friction to wear the nails mats might work though.
@SkylarkAscending I definitely wouldn't try wire she'd wreck her feet for sure. She's loose with my spaniel in the back room, I'd be concerned about the windows if she were loose in the whole house
@skinnydipper I've used boots before she hates them and is either miserable and won't move or removes them
