Following on from the post below I thought I would vent something that I have been stewing on for 3 days and get your opinions. My horse is on livery at a yard nearby. Im a medical student so I have him on full livery week days so I have time to ride for at least 30 mins at night. This means my feeds are mixed in their feedroom.
I have been there two years and repeatedly at regular intervals make it clear they should not use spoons/ share buckets with my horse as several of theirs are on bute/ various other things.
I even have bright yellow tub trugs so its clear which are mine. About two months ago one cracked and kept leaking joint supplement out so I got a new one. They took the old one out the bin and asked if they could use it as they were short. As they are generally pretty good I said so long as its kept separate.
Further to this two girls on the yard have come from college, dropped out to stay at the yard and have never had any formal training regarding anything and are allowed to mix feeds including those with bute etc. A couple of times this week the old bucket was used for my horses feed. I also saw them use my buckets for another medicated pony then just swish it out with water. I then saw and obviously scrubbed and threw away the feed already mixed in it. (What a waste!)
I have lots of personal stuff going on at the moment and this is the last thing I need to worry about. Its not been easy to see the head girl as she's pregnant and working less and i'm revising alot. So I left a note above his feed stuff saying

' Please make sure Mintys feeds are mixed in his buckets only and they are not used for anything else. If he is drugs tested and bute/any banned substance is found in his system I will be banned/fined from competing.
There is also no point me buying supplements if they all leak onto the floor.
Thank you.'

Before the next bit I will add the head girl always says address her not the rda centre owner who has nothing to do with the yard.
The next day the yard owner comes up and has a complete Benny at me for being so rude and implying they are stupid and ripped the note down and I should go to her. Not giving me a chance to say the girls have been told 20 times at least, the note was not directly aimed at the head girl, I wanted to make it clear to everyonre each times they mix feeds so they don't forget, and also show how important it is. The thing that really got me was that she then said if I continue feeding out the bucket off the floor and letting my horse drop bits out, rather than the manger which they do not clean before they use it I have no right to say anything about possible dope in the feed!!!! - I refrained from asking if this was because her staff left so many open bute packets on the floor they were treading it into my stable 50 yards away.
On the whole they are so good and now i'm questioning how wrong I was?
But how will a doping allegation look against a medical student - it will be to my name not theirs. Also are they going to refund livery/training money for this year if I can't compete for 6 months cos they are careless - I doubt it! I have been so fuming but not sure if its justified?

I guess idealliy you could have chatted to the head girl but she was unavailable.

Not sure what level you're competing at but I have only ever seen horses tested at 3 days.

In my stables drugs are added to the feeds at the stable not int he feed room. There is then no risk of contamination from the buckets being stacked on each other or leaking and the right horse definately gets the drugs!

I would feel exactly the same and having horses on the yard I am stabled who have bute I constantly worry and remind them, Saf was tested 2 years ago at BCA and although I knew she was clear I still worried about possible trace elements from other horses

I have twice been tested at PN/N in the last few years - maybe I have a sticky tag saying 'TEST me!'. I was at a different yard then. The crux of the problem I think is that the two girls do not listen to the head girl as now she's pregnant she's not about to keep an eye. Several people have mentioned this to YO who refuses to beleive it. I feel a bit like I have no options!

I have started to do this, but in the mornings they sometimes use the empty buckets I think (I have to be at hospital car park for 07.30 and already get up at quarter to six and reaaly can't cope getting up at quarter to 5 every morning to get there first and get my work done properly - call me lazy. ).i have stopped them feeding him at all now tho, and I think the message has for now sunk in. I'm more concerned by YO's reaction and whether I really was that offensive. I don't want to have everyone at the yard angry at me!!

I would be looking for another yard if someone spoke to me like that - at the end of the day you are the one that is held accountable if you get tested and you are the paying client.

Honestly, I think you would need to move as obviously there is now a trust issue at the yard, hopefully they do have some integrity but for my peace of mind I would like to move. Is there any way you could do DIY livery and either pay a freelance groom to do mornings at least you know they would only be using your stuff doing your horse. I also found that there are an abundance of experienced "horsey" medical students (often you only get to know by a chance remark) that are willing to do mornings for a ride a week as I found on surgery I couldn't do horse and get back ready for ward round at 7.45am but students on medicine often had a lot more time in the morning!

Thanks I_LOVE_DUNS that may be worth a try. I have to be a bit careful cos alot of riding involves trying not to offend him and get bucked off :P lol.
So if anybody does know of any good yards around warwick can you let me know please, need either an indoor or fllodlit outdoor for winter and all year yurnout?

At least it might make OH happy as he's not too keen on the place!

'Doping' your horse with Bute won't get you a black mark against your name, medical-wise - don't worry. Only stuff that goes on your CRB record is a problem.

I think full livery is so expensive and so dependent on trust that you might want to think about moving yards. I also think that just because you are youngish and a student does not give your YO the right to go off at you like that. Vote with your feet. Where are you at medical school - might be able to recommend somewhere? Also, do you also have vet students at your uni? When I was doing my exams, I used to get some of the vet students to look after and exercise my horses.

ETS:- have you thought about maybe going to a professional eventer's yard near Warwick? They will be much more scrupulous about bute etc and often have a very high standard of care.

I am sure there is a HHO that set up a lovely looking yard near warwick- I think their username was Claire(?).

I'm at warwick uni, but I live about 20mins away so as to be near the yard (CV35, just outside of warwick). No vet students - its just post-grad med students about 160 per year. O f course I may fail my exams and end up doing something else anyway!!
Any pro's to suggest?
