and now does not have enough hoof wall to re shoe. Farrier is coming back out to do "glue shoes" but does anyone know the liklihood of permanent damage/problems?

Definately grows back, our mare was turned away for 5 months without shoes. She came back in with awful feet, lumps taken out of each hoof. Two shoeings later and you wouldn't know at all.. Time, is all it takes..

If your horse rips chunks out of their feet, have you thought about going barefoot? You'd need a good barefoot trimmer, farriers in my experiance aren't are good with trimming barefoot feet

It's the first time he has ever pulled chunks off his feet like this. He is a TB and I don't know how he would manage without shoes as he is always really footsore when missing a shoe (even when he hasn't lost half his hooves).

I padded and wrapped his feet as they were so tender but there was a bit of heat in both fronts yesterday. The farrier is coming tomorrow to do the shoes so I will get him to take a look first. He is eating ok and is standing resting a hind which I took to be a good sign?

Beau's front feet wre like jigsaws this summer because of him digging and tearing aroun the field, that was when i decided to put shoes on him, although he didnt have enough wall for them for 8 weeks!

He was totally sound though and it grew back no problem.

It shouldnt cause any lasting damage - my boy went out on loan over the summer and came back with 1 shoe on and the other feet very badly damaged and not enough foot to nail shoes onto.... My farrier is a complete star I have to add but 2 shoeings later and feet as good as new. My boy was also a TB but had never lost a shoe before I hope this helps you will have to be carefull about not turning out in boggy fields etc

i wouldn't worry too much, mine used to pull off his front shoes every 3 weeks without fail, and the farrier managed to get them back on every time.
now he's managed to adjust all his feet so that the toes are shorter, and the heels are better. also he's more balanced generally, so doesn't catch himself and pull the shoes off, and his feet are much better now.
