Want to start using a double bridle on my cob - he is ridden in a metal pelham with a port and loves it. How do I choose the combination of bits for a double??

I have ridden my boy in a double bridle and it was wonderful. I had a metal pelham and a loose ring french link. We choose this combination because he somethines got over excited and VERY strong so for the times he was behaving well i could take up most of the contact on the french link and the loose ring allowed me to play more with his mouth. Then the times I needed it i could use the pelham.
I stopped using it because this is quite a severe bit as growing use to it. There sre feww other places to go after a double!!!
What are your reasons for choosing a double bridle? This will help in choosing the right combination... x

just go to yur local tack shop and ask for a weymouth and bradoon...

the bradoon needs to be 1/2 larger than what your cob usually wears..the weymouth the same size.....

dont forget the curb chain and the lip strap!

I want to use one for dressage - am currently prelim/novice (using fulmer with french link) but ponio is quite strong in this bit. Will continue to work on getting him going better in a snaffle but ultimately want to progress (over the next year) to Elementary where I can use a double bridle. Ponio is 10 yrs old and generally a bit pig headed!!

A double bridle is for the fine tuning once your horse is in true self carriage, in front of your leg with impulsion & balance. Many people think they should use a double bridle because their horse doesn't go on the bit or won't offer enough neck bend! make sure you have him well schooled enough with the above before you spend your hard earned cash on a double bridle/bits otherwise you will create a false impression of him looking like he is on the bit which the judges will/should recognise, its similar to a horse that has always been ridden in draw reins, they build up the wrong neck muscles! Elementary tests can still be ridden in a snaffle so you don't need to use a 'double' unless your horse is schooled correctly to take it.
