My ponies are on a 3 year worming program from the vets. In year 1 and 2 there are only 4 doses 2 x pramox and 2 x equest. In year 3 there is a double dose of pyratape P then 4 weeks later the 5 day guard then every 8 weeks the panacur granules and then at the end of the yr the double dose of pyratape and the 5 day guard again. What do people think of this? Is the double dose really necessary? I don't think I'm happy giving them a double dose along with all that other stuff... surely one is enough?

Anyone elses program the same? Help appreciated muchly :)

I'm no expert on worming but with all those chemicals going in , i'm surprised your ponies don't glow in the dark:D Have you ever done worm counts to establish whether or not they really need this amount of worming ? If i was you i would seek advice / worming plan from somewhere like westgate labs ( you can find them on line ) as i would be worried that your vet is not impartial in these matters ( not that I'm saying he's trying to get money out of you ) but...a slightly moderated plan which gives your ponies the best health and worm eradication, could also save you £££££'s

I know !! I e-mailed Westgate labs about 3/4 times asking how often I would need to redo the worm count and if they would recommend a wormer when the results were given but got no reply so did not continue as I didn't know enough about it :(

Thanks ECID

Gosh  That is strange , i found them quite helpful and of course they're not the only worm lab people so maybe shop around. Funnily enough i get my advice from my local feed merchants ( cornwall Farmers - you've probably got a county based merchant ) the staff have all had in-depth training on worming plans and which chemicals and doses at what time of the year , i think by law now they have to have this knowledge before being able to sell wormers - so a trip to a really good feed merchant should do the trick , someone somewhere must produce a wall chart yearly plan thing that you could get..:)
