What "type" of reins are you "supposed" to use in a double set? Is it possible to use rubber-covered ones or would it be too awkward? What do you use?
I've tacked up horses with double bridles before, but never noticed the reins! Please excuse my ignorance!

Usually one plain set and one plaited I think. I use two plain sets. I have tried to use one rubber and one plain but was far too bulky in my hands.

I am not sure what is 'correct'. I have only ever used them for showing classes, and gave up after the 2nd show as I didnt really enjoy showing.

I had some lovely one's that were covered in rubber on the inside on my double and then just plain leather for the curb rein.

I think traditionally you would use plain leather reins for showing etc but you would get a lot more grip with rubber reins!

I have double reins on my jumping bridle and I have rubber rains on top and continental reins on my curb.
I think traditionally you should have plain leather on top plaited on the bottom.

Laced on the snaffle rein and plain on the curb on my double.
I have seen plaited snaffle rein and laced curb (a bit of a handful IMO) and laced snaffle with a half rubbered curb rein.
I manage fine with the laced/plain combo.

They should both be plain reins to be correct. Believe it or not, the two reins do give a good grip unless of course they get covered in real runny sweat! Some people do use laced or plaited reins on the snaffle rein, plain on the bottom which don't look too bad or you could use those one sided rubber reins. I think if you used rubber you'd find it too bulky unless you have enormous hands!
