Buzz has got a double whorl on his head and my vet's assistant told me when i first got him that it meant he would be a good one, and he has been! Also my friends pony had a Properos thumb print and we where told that was a sign of good things, And i was told coloured horses with 'medicine cap' markings on there head where held in high esteem by native indian tribes. so waht other things have you heard mean good/bad things, or old wives tales??

It is said that there is never a bad horse with double whorls!
Also said there's no such thing as a bad dun horse.........??
Who knows????
Horses with large ears that curl towards the top (I think) are said to have the "devil's ears".

It is also said that people who have had too many glasses of wine, shouldn't be posting after 11.00 pm!!

A 'tache apparently means that a horse is reliable. i actually have a book on this but haven't read it in ages!

I know a horse with half a 'tache. What does that mean?

Only slightly reliable? Actually, that's quite a good description of him

The prophets thumb mark back in history has something to do with arabian horses,religion etc,horse maybe has arabian blood?!However can also just be a birth mark,could even be an old injury that has left an indentation
Never heard of the whorl thing,but big ears are supposed to be a sign of a genuine horse

My horse has none of the old wives tales etc and he is 1 in a million
smile.gif

Guess it depends on how superstitious you are etc

One white foot, keep him not a day,
Two white feet, send him far away,
Three white feet, sell him to a friend,
Four white feet, keep him to the end.

what about a horse with a heart on his head?

always been taught that 4 white feet keep him for yourself, but cant find the rest of the rhyme, I know 3 white feet give to the wife

Big ears = donkey blood :P :P

The one I know is:

One white foot buy him;
Two white feet try him;
Three white feet look all about him;
Four white feet do without him!

Oh - and big ears is supposedly a sign of speed!

Yes, thats the one I heard!

I thought it was the other way round, one white keep, four whites not!

I have also heard the one about big ears. My dad's horse has big ears and she's a right moody baggage!

[/ QUOTE ]

your right the one I know is 'one white sock keep him all his life'

can't remember the rest

I knew "One buy him, two try him, three suspect him, 4 reject him"...

Double whorls are meant to be the sign of a good horse, Lucinda Green told me that when inspecting Godfrey who had 2
smile.gif
! Goddy also has a raised bit between his eyes which is meant to be a sign of temper, and small curly ears
tongue.gif

Lucky only has one whirl though
smirk.gif
Although she has one in the middle of her neck which is unusual and mean to to be Lucky.. hence her name

Thanks will check tonight.

There are quite a few mentioned in his passport but as yet another bright bay tb with no white anywhere I think they were desperate for any distinguishing features.

A long whirl down the face is meant to be a sign of friendliness. Lots of whorls equals a complex character. Also small eyes means the horse can be stubborn and awkward (got these from a book before anyone disagrees and gets offended!).

Whats the thing about coloureds, medicine cap? Do you have a picture of this? I want to know if my horse has one!

Ear tufts are a sign of wilfulness. A single whorl set lower than the eyes is a sign of high intelligence and playfulness. A forehead that slopes steeply backwards from the eyes to the poll is a very bad sign(but I can't remember exactly why - must dig out that old book again!)

My pony has 2 whorls on his face, a whorl either side of his tummy exactly opposite each other, one on the underside of his neck, two one on each hamstring and two underneath his tummy what could that mean??!!! haha

The 3 duns I've had have all had some form of issue...

First would literally try and kill you in the stable, he was truely evil, however the minute you got on his back he was an angel,

Second decided one day that she had had enough of cross country and threw me on top of a fence back first leaving me unable to walk for weeks

And the 3rd was my gorgeous lad, who had no respect for any form of fencing, or other geldings, stable doors, weeve bars, etc, etc, etc....lol

Duns traumatise me!

I'm sure all kinds of stuff about whorls and other unique horse features is all covered in a book (sorry, don't know the title) by Linda Tellington-Jones, the Amercian lady who invented TTouch (Tellington Touch) and TTeam. I don't have the book myself but do remember browsing through it in a tack shop once.

The grey Arab in my avatar has a double whorl. I love him to bits and wouldn't change him for the world but although he's extremely gently and good natured, I would also describe him as quite a complex character, a bit (a lot) of a drama queen, not particularly confident, and incredibly stubborn when he decides he doesn't want to do something.
