Ok how many points does it take to mean a horse can no longer do prelim unles downgraded? JAck has 72 points, I havent competed for months so would want to start from the bottom of the pile and work back up, he however has competed and been placed in Medium tests. Also what does downgrading do in terms of value to a horse- are they less vauable if this is done- I worked Shadow up the ranks so have noooo idea about downgrading etc. Thanks in advance

Prelim is only open to horses with less than 37 points. This will increase to 49 on 1st December.

Downgrading can be done according to the riders group so it would depend on what level you have won points at.

Jack is just still in Novice with 72 points (Novice being up to 74 until 1st Dec when it goes up to 124) and if you have won points at Novice level or above then you couldn't downgrade him.

However if you have not won any BD points you could downgrade him to 40 points which still doesn't make him eligable for Prelim at the mo but is the lowest amount any horse can be downgraded to.

Ok, so let me get this straight in my head- I have won points at novice so I shouldnt downgrade him- he can still win two points till he is out of novice, but in december he has another 50 or so points he can gain at novice level until we have to compete at elementary is that right? So all in all- dont downgrade?

Yep that's pretty much spot on. You wouldn't be able to downgrade him because you have ridden and won points at Novice which is the grade he is currently in. A rider cannot downgrade a horse lower than the level the rider has won points at.

From 1st December the points limits are all rising so Jack will be able to carry on competing in Novice until he has more than 124 points.

If you compete him affiliated now and he scores more than 2 points then he will upgrade to elementary and only be able to compete at that level or above until the 1st December when he would revert back to Novice because of the change in limits.

Confusing isn't it!!!
