Hi all,
I have a horse who is built a bit lower at the front than the back ...but is leveling off now with work.
However......I need to maintain a relatively short rein to keep said horse off it's head...but in the process...I tip forward...If I lengthen my reins I sit up straight.....and said horse tips on to the forehand :)

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks for looking.

I assume you mean he is croup high? Some grow out of that - and you can make a more even frame with work. Loads and loads of transitions are the key to helping him sit back and work more correctly. You shouldn't be holding his head up for him. Its no good for his mouth and he will just learn to lean. He will only develop the correct musculature to balance himself if you let him do it. Correct action comes through from behind - not by being held up and the front.

Fab Shay...thank you...

Yes croup high and getting so much better :) I don't hold the head up and am very conscious of not doing that....but I am guilty of leaning forwards.....horse doesn't lean...thank fully...but I tip! Will continue on with the transitions...was happy to hear I am doing the right thing so will continue...that said...when the horse goes well...I am stunned by how good it is....when I don't tip forward..lol :)

You could try lunge lessons to help with your core stability? Also working without stirrups or working standing (as in upright - not 2 point) in your stirrups. The latter 2 work more for lower leg stability - but it is all connected!
