Nice idea, but what it the justification? Petitions are pointless with the Inland Revenue as noone "wants" to pay tax, so you have to argue from a position of logic and precedence. Most people would sign a petition to abolish income tax, but it isn't going to happen!
E.g. is VAT charged on private medical treatment? I don't know, but it would be a logical comparison.
The point is that VAT isn't supposed to be charged on essential items. Given the currant animal welfare legislation, people are obliged under the law to obtain appropriate Vetenary treatment for animals. Therefore, it is essential. I don't know if VAT is paid on private medical insurance, but there is no NHS for animals!
I think there are loads of reasons to justify signing this petition! Well done to stella for bringing this to our attention. We are taxed more and more and yet this is a free country - we are allowed, and we should, stand up against something if we don't agree. We supposedly live in a democracy but unless we all join in and sign petitions like this, this country will become a dictatorship!!!

animals don't go out and get jobs and pay NI contributions. If they did I'd glady see them get NHS treatment and state schooling
.
At the end of the day an owner chooses to buy an animal, knowing that thye would have to pay vets fees. Hence why most of us have insurance for our animals. If you lived in America you wouldnt get NHS either.
I'm sorry, but people need to get a grip, there are far more pressing things for the goverment to be doing than worrying about petty irks re VAT on vets fees... ie stopping terrorism.
Very good point about VAT. If I didn't wear a riding hat, and I fell off - my NHS bill would be a whole lot bigger!! It's a bit wrong how they get away with charging it on safety wear. I also agree about the animal welfare legislation making vets bills "compulsory". But as Katy says it's our choice to buy an animal.
Still I think it's a valid petition, and thanks for posting the link!!

They will argue that unless you own a horse as part of your business, owning 1 is not essential.
A petition to abolish VAT on adult riding safety equipment has more chance of success. Pick a fight you might win!

I didn't pick it, I'm just drawing people's attention to it
I do take on board the point that you and Katy are making that having an animal is not essential and, you're right, that does put it in a different light. Its just that when someone drew my attention to it, that didn't occur to me because my lot are such an integral part of my life
The same point can be made about safety equipment though can't it? As its not essential to ride!

oh, but surely wearing safety equipment actually saves the NHS money?
I don't know, all I know is I chose to take on the responsibility of having a pony, and don't mind the vAT on vets fees.
