This isn't meant to be a controvesial post! I just wanted to know how many people here go draghunting in preference to fox hunting or vice versa? And if so, why?

I have taken my horse to both and I thought he enjoyed his draghunting more as he could bowl along and get into a steady rhythm. He got very wound up regular hunting with the stopping and starting - it must have seemed that no sooner had he got going but he was hauled up again! Plus he's naturally a very sweaty boy so he got cold and pissed off when stood around. So, those are my reasons for draghunting but I'm interested to hear other people's opinions.

This is from a foot follower's perspective - I prefer the foxhounds when following a mounted pack as the pace is slower, the hound work better and the checks give me time to catch up and get back on the pace. Also with the current range of exemptions it makes it interesting.

I followed the Drag Hounds on foot once, they were on home turf for me and within 30 minutes they had shot through the coverts which would take us half a day to draw!

I haven't tried draghunting but I think that I would find it too fast and furious - but I'm an oldie!! I enjoy the stops, time to have a chat, have a swig of everyone's concoction and also watch the hounds working. If your horse winds up at every halt then I can see that draghunting would be preferable though!

i have done both and definitley prefer fox hunting, the main reason is i like to watch foxhounds work...and i quite like the stopping and starting as it gives my 18yr old hunter time to rest AND gives me a rest =P plus i prefer to have a quick scan of the countryside, a sip from my hio flask and a gossip...before ambling off again for a quick gallop! =)

draghunts seemed a bit fast and furious for my liking...couldn't really stop atall (as my hunter is really strong...) i deffos prefer fox hunting =) xxx

My OH is hunting draghounds at the mo, but as he comes from a fox hunting background, he has worked hard to make changes to our hunt. He too loves to see hounds work and to provide entertainment to our foot followers. It is possible to slow draghunting down a bit and get hounds to cast about and work to find the scent, it just relies on your relationship with the trail layer.
