First ODE of the season and the boy was an utter nightmare. Completely ignored me in the dressage, did his best giraffe impression spooked constantly. The SJ was a nightmare - far bigger and wider then we are used to and I pulled up and retired after 3 cat-lept jumps. We had no rythum and the boy was all over the place. I started to loose confidence and thought pulling up was the best idea. Was allowed to do the XC HC but pulled up after jump 2 as he was being ultra spooky and nappy and we were generally all over the place.

Guess it was just one of those bad days - oh well, onwards and upwards I guess. I was overfaced with the SJ so am planning on doing lots of simple grids and doing a small confidence giving SJ class next weekend to get my stride back.

Hope you all had better weekends than me.

Oh no! Was just wondering how you got on

Big hug xx

Thanks - guess we were not ready for the jump from 2.6/2.9 to 3ft yet.

Not like me to pull up at all but he was all over the place and I was worried either he or I were going to come to harm - there was no way I was going to put him at 3ft combinations when my heart was not in it and I did not have the nerve to kick on and go for it.

I've got an XC clinic with Nick Turner on Sat then an SJ comp on Sunday which should help.

I guess the stressage thing is just a case of him relaxing and listening to me which will only come if I remain relaxed and he goes out more often so its not so exciting.

I see you did both classes on sat - well done, another ribbon.

Aww, thanks heaps T.

Not sure what time yet - have to call on Thursday. Its at Hill House (http://www.hillhousecrosscountry.com/) and the course looks fab so I am really excited.

Thanks for the offer re: Sun - I am literally going for the clear round and the 2'3" or 2'6" as I need to get a nice chilled round under my belt to tick the "we can do this" box again. I am taking Ab's as well to keep it fun

. Come another time when I am doing something a bit better.....its a long way to come otherwise.

I think you deserve a big well done for Sat - 4th is great and it was your first time in a DB (?) so well done for doing that

I think we will see lots of posts like yours over the next few weeks, too much spring grass, not enough opportunites to get out and show them Xc etc and the general excitement of working on a grass surface.
I think put that day behind you, go back a level or two and start again.
I'm a firm believer in doing small courses until you feel frustrated with boredom..(and the fact it all seems so easy) Then you and the horse are ready to move up a level.
Chin up, by the time the summer comes you will be back at the same level and full of confidence.

teething problems, at least you are getting them out of the way already.

We are off to first BE of the season at Isleham on Sat.

Whereabouts are you Saf as all your local venues are mine too, I an near Beds, herts, Cambs borders too between baldock and Buntingford.

Thanks HH, thats made me feel a lot better. Am doing a tiny clear round and a little course after that to get my confidence back and show help the boy get into a stride.

Good point about "doing small courses until you feel frustrated with boredom", I think a lot of people feel that they have to move up a level rather than being ready. I know I did because I had one or two placings at 2.6/2.9 and the boy produces some good work at home and I thought we should be on the next level....rather than knowing we were ready IYSWIM.

Thistle - I am in the Potton area, do you know it? Going to Hill House at Carlton on Saturday then Longbridge which is just down the road to me on Sunday. Not sure where Isleham is - I only moved up here form Essex last Autumn and this is our first season here.

[muses] I wonder if thats another issue...I knew my old "local" venues so well and was confident there so I thought the same would happen up here.

Used to take the ponies to POtton when Bee was small. Hate it there now, turns everything orange!

I don't like the indoor surface at Lordsbridge, it needs some serious money spending on it and a refurb, indoor warm up is small and can be scary.

Outdoor jumping there is fab, big level grass rings with bright jumps.

Isleham is out on the fens just the other side of Newmarket, have a look at the Soham PC branch website for details of unaff events there. The going is always OK as it is on peat.

Keysoe is much better for SJ than Lordsbriges and quite close to you also.

Thanks Thistle - I am pretty new to the area so have only been to Potton once and yes, everything eas turned electric orange!

Not been to L'Bridge yet but its only 10 mins down the road so very handy and I'll def warm up at home if the warm-up area is bad.

Off to Keysoe in a few weeks for an eventer-trial - they look fun.
