Me that is. I feel so bad and so stupid. Went hunting last Weds and horse got kicked in the shoulder, came up short so I brought him home. He stiffened and swelled up when he got back. Buted him and turned him out.

Next day I checked it when he came in and the swelling had massively reduced and he trotted up sound. So I am highly ashamed to say I haven't worried about it too much since, just given him time off turned out in the field during the day.

Was getting ready to go hunting this morning and went to groom shoulder, horse antsy about it and I realised it's still swollen and warm. Sacked the idea of hunting and now I feel dreadful that I've been so complacent.

So is this normal for 5 days after a hefty kick? It's in the muscle bang on the side of his shoulder. I am tempted to get the vet today. Thoughts?

Is the horse still sound? If he is sound, I would wait another couple of days and see if the heat has gone.....deep muscle bruises do take quite some time to 'come out' fully.

If he is lame, I would call the vet

He's sound as a £. When I went to get him in yesterday I watched him chasing his field pals about, sound as a bell. I thought that was proof positive he's ok. But I didn't consider that he might still be sore on it, also that as he's swollen all around that area, the saddle flap might annoy him.

Thanks, I am going to ring the vet in a mo just to get some advice over the phone, see what they think xx

If its bruising there's little they can do that you're not already doing, although they may well restrict the speed work

Rubbing arnica into bruising can help bring it out, best of luck x

When mine got kicked out hunting (near fore between knee and shoulder) it took 2 weeks for the swelling to go down, and for it to be pain-free to touch, she was sound all along. I had vet call out on the monday (done on sat), just gave her a bute jab that day, then i had it x rayed 12 days after she was kicked and nothing showed up. So i would say leave it 10 days before you start to panic, may just give a sachet of bute a day if you have some. If still sore after 10 day - 14days then i would get vet out!

Also rested her (obviously!) she was allowed turn out, but no exercise.

Thank you all, the vet said what you all did - a deep bruise will take a while to come out, give him more time off, if it doesn't go by the end of this week then get them to have a look. There is nothing they'd do at present. I will keep you posted!
