my horse got so bored last winter! his turnout is severly restricted but i at least try to turn him out while mucking out (moving yards is not an option sadly!).is there anything i can do to make it better for him? he has haylage 4 x a day when hes in and his hardfeed, i give him swedes but they are gone within the hour!! hes not backed yet but has begun his groundwork so i can lead etc but its obv weather permitting!!

How about one of those balls that you can put nuts in? I've got a swede destroyer / lickit murdering monster and she quite likes playing with the ball for a bit.

Weirdly I've literally just been discussing the winter with a friend this morning, I wonder what it is that's making us think of it already? My current plan is to keep riding before work under floodlights because it is vile either way and I've really noticed a positive difference this summer having changed my routine to riding in the mornings compared to waiting until the evening.

thankyou for your ideas! id never thought of one of those balls! im not keen on the likkit idea as theyre too sugary and he lives off fresh air! theres nowhere for me to attach a mirror though :( i think il investigate the ball idea, do you know if just coarse mix would do in one? or am i best with pony nuts?

How are you feeding the swedes? I drill a hole in mine and hang them on a rope from a beam in the stable - HOURS of fun...

5 minutes of fun for mine if I do that... He bites it off in lumps. He's a talented animal. Or that's how I choose to see it ;)

Get a roll ball and put any feed in it but ensure you have a couple of bits that are too big to escape thru the hole so the horse never thinks it is empty and keeps trying to get it out.

An old milk carton tied up with cut up carrot in it is also good.

I too am worried! Mine is a talented (too clever for his own good ;)) 4 year old and I dread the winter months coming up! I'll turnout as much as poss with pig oil in good supply for his legs, and will use any boredom breakers I can come up with! Am tempted to slightly deflate a football or bite the bullet and buy a jolly ball.. he's obsessed with anything that rolls! :p xx

im not sure how to 'quote' but the person that said a full bale.. im afraid my boy wouldnt fit out of the door if he consumed that amount of haylage! and i drill a hole through the swede and dangle from his hay manger and its gone the next morning! iv just purchased a extra fine mesh hay net for those with dietry problems so hopefully that will slow his eating down :) the milk carton and carrots sounds interesting?
thankyou everyone!! hopefully hel stay a happy bunny this year!
:D
