Can anyone tell me if they are good for non withered horses,I have a lovely Barnsby saddle at the moment but its slipping badly and horse is bunny hopping/bucking and reluctant to go forward.I already use a grip pad with it.
Oberbaubles - I am interested in why you say that?? I have one for my wide welsh D who when i bought her was very very fat no wither and it was great for then, have to admit i dont use it very often now but its nice to know it is there and will fit anything - barring a high wither TB.
Somebody one my yard has one & she loves it, she bought it for a wide backed horse that every saddle slipped on (including a made to measure one) the horse used to buck a lot as well.
The bucking stopped with the dream team saddle, it's now being used on an ex-polo pony who also goes well in it.
They are a lovely looking saddle and good quality leather.
BUT - when they were launched I was very surprised at the high cost of them considering they were an unknown brand and merely a rip off of the Torsion saddles the vendors had been selling for years.
If I were to splash out such cash on a treeless - I would use a tried and trusted brand (I have been using treeless saddles for 10 years now).
Having followed the DT saddles - not many of them are in use long term.
My main problem with them stems from two of my friends having bought brand new ones. Both horses suffered back problems in a matter of months (even though they were used for light hacking only).
One pony had quite serious shoulder injuries and needed the whole summer off plus physio. The 'pommel' had snapped and the jagged ends were digging into the top of the shoulder blade when ridden.
Despite the saddle being only a couple of months old from brand new - the vendor refused to acknowledge the problem and only refunded the cost when the buyer threatened legal action! Not great service and not a safe saddle IMO .
Safe treeless saddles that can be picked up second hand from eBay are Solution, Ansur, Heather Moffett SBS/Fhoenix/Vogue, Mondial, Torsion, Barefoot, Trekker, StarTekk, Dartmoor, Treefree, Bob Marshall.
I would even trust a cheap and cheerful Libra saddle over a DT one.
My personal favourite is my beloved Freeform £800 brand new 6 years ago. It's done hundreds of miles and been extremely abused (left in damp and thrown around by myself) but it still looks beautiful and is sooooo comfy .
An Equitex pad is also a sound investment for any treeless (except the panelled ones).
And do bear in mind that just because a Barnsby hasn't worked that another treed saddle won't work - there are specialists out there like me, who fit wide and flat horses with saddles specially designed for them. Not dissing treeless just pointing out options.
