im hoping to try a bit of dressage this year as my horse has recovered from a suspensory ligament injury so i dont wanna do any jumping and risk re-injury. not done any dressage before at all and to be quite honest i dont know a real lot about it! If anyone has any hints, tips, useful websites or books that may help me getting started (including training my horse as he has never done it either, as far as i know!), i would be very grateful!!!

Hey...a dressage convert, once you take it up you'll be hooked! I would suggest first to find a good instructor who can get you and your horse off to the right start. It may be a good idea to go along to some BD events in your area and watch some tests to get an idea of how it all works and th format of the competitions (If you go onto the British Dressage website you can find out where there are competitions going on in your area). I would suggest starting off slowley and building up your horse's strength and balance and your confidence. Once you and your horse (with your instructors advice) feel ready then you can enter some unaffiliated prelims and start from there.

Good luck and enjoy!

Thank you very much!! Will get myself down to a local competition!!

Hi Kat, if you have local non-affliated compettions volunteer to write for the judge, I do it once a month and its been a total revelation and really helped with my training, some of the judges are really good at explaining what they're looking for and where you can really gain marks. I always got low marks for my free walk, I think because we neglected it in lessons, since I've been writing I understand more what I'm aiming for and Ryus free walk is great now (if I say so myself!) might even make up for the crap canter! If you want a insight into dressage its well worth volunteering to write, its like free training plus you usually get a free cup of cofee and some cake!
