I was just wondering whether anyone could answer this for me...

I have entered a competition on Sat 10th November which I really want to attend, but on the Friday I am having the biopsy on my neck (in two areas) under LA and this will leave me with a very painful scar right where my shirt and stock sit. So, I was wondering whether I would have to write to the venue to request permission to compete with an open shirt and no stock?

Thanks,

Rebecca x

I'm sure they will make an exception, as they do in hot weather when you can compete without jackets.

My sister competed with her arm in a cast and couldn't wear a glove on that hand and all she did was asked her consultant for a note explaining that she was fit to ride but unable to wear gloves and the venue accepted it no problem.

Hope all goes OK - I'm going in Friday to have some lumps removed too so maybe we can compare holes!

When I competed with a broken hand, I rang BD and they sent me a letter of dispensation to allow me to ride with only one glove, as I couldn't get a glove over the strapping!
I just took the letter to the venue, who gave it to the judge.

You should be able to do the same.

I'd say start by contacting the venue...but bear in mind you may be pushing it to be riding the day after biopsy...any stretching of skin could hurt plus sweating would sting like hell. I know its not the same but when i had a lump removed it was two weeks before i rode again and that was with really good painkillers!

I am having it done under Local though, so hoping I should be ok... but will only know when the time comes. The scars are not in any creases or folds, they are on the side of my neck so I was hoping that it would not be too bad

then you should be ok...get some of those Mepore plasters...they are brilliant and you may actually find it possible to wear shirt/stock over them!

The scar is going to be about three inches long on one and two inches long for the second one... I am having it done by one of the top vascular surgeons in the country (he is a friend of a friend luckily) and he is renowned for being a very neat and small stitcher

Where can I get those plasters from?

I was thinking more about the pressure of a collar and stock on the wound... my collar is quite snug

I'm sure it will be fine, I'd email/phone the venue and/or BD and they may ask for it in writing but I can't see it being a problem, if it is I think they're very mean! I hope everything works out for you...

you should be able to get the mepore from any good pharmacy...that is also the same type of plaster they will prob put on it after its done! you could always experiment that evening...you might get away with your stock and a normal white tshirt or something similiar if it is the collar that is snug fitting

From a practical point of view, be prepared to withdraw on the Saturday as there is quite a high chance that you will feel very sore in the area; the LA shouldn't make you feel funny, but the biopsy itself may well do, as the area is very tender, though your consultant sounds excellent.

Having said that, if you are sure you're physically ok to do it then go ahead, as it will no doubt lift your spirits

Best of luck for the biopsy, fingers firmly crossed its harmless.

Id contact the venue hun - im sure they will be fine about it and if there not then its not fair !! good on you for still going - hope all goes well for you xxxxxx

You dont have to ask permission. I saw a girl recently riding in a vest top underneath her jacket and no stock or anything, she was competing at medium and won the class!!

I have emailed BD and they are sending it on to the Director of Rules and Fixtures to get a temporary dispensation

So, I just have to wait now

I have also emailed the venue but not heard back from them as of yet
