On Sunday I am hopefully doing some dressage tests on my loan horse. I've decided to do 2 prelims and have previously done a intro and prelim before.

In one of my tests there are 2 "moves" I'm not sure how to perform, one is give and retake the reins, last time I had a g&r the inside rein and didn't do it well so how can I ensure I don't get it wrong (or atleast not get a comment saying no clear g&r!)? Also there's a trot, walk for one horses length and trot again and I'm not sure quite how long I have to walk for (have done it a year or so ago but I had an instructor to tell me when to trot again).

Any help would be appreciated, I do like dressage but really do not understand some of the things in the tests!

With the G&R you need to push the reins towards the bit (not the ears) until there is a clear loop in the reins, it should last about 3 strides (I think) the horse should maintain a consistent outline and rhythm throughout.

For the trot walk trot I always count about 3 strides I think (not sure how right they is!).

Give & retake, you need to be very clear, really push your arms forward, hold for a couple of seconds then take back.

Walk: make sure you are actually walking, then count 1 2 3 4 then ask for trot. Better to leave an extra stride than trot too soon. Don't count the downwards transition steps.
