Ok here goes,

I have a new horse whos come to me being ridden in a D Ring Copper Roller Snaffle. He goes really lovely in this, however its not dressage legal. (so im aware?)

I have tried him in a loose ring french link snaffle but its too light in his mouth so he struggles to pick up a contact.

Hes really not strong, so dont want anything strong, but need something thats got a bit of weight on it so he feels like he can take the contact. Hes also quite mouthy so was thinking of something with copper in as this would then help him salivate and play with the bit more?

Any ideas or recommendations? Would deffo need to be dressage legal as taking him BE soon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :)

i would stick to a single joint if that's what he's used to. Maybe try and eggbutt snaffle that is copper.
However, if he likes the roller bit, then you can get full cheek snaffles with a copper roller as the centre link - this IS legal.
there are other roller bits available too but they'd be my first port of call :)
also - it is possible to get D ring copper snaffles (single joint) but i believe they're a "racing" bit? and very hard to come by :(

I had a similar issue, my mare is always in a snaffle (loose ring french link) but she wasn't accepting the bit as much as I would have like when schooling. I tried my yard owners neue schule loose ring trans angled lozenge and I couldn't believe how much she accepted this. Much more accepting, lighter and softer, schooling is much more enjoyable and its dressage legal :D

If you know anyone with one of these its well worth a try, good luck!

i have his d ring copper roller snaffle! but in fairness have never seen one before! i love the neue schule ones, but i will need to borrow one first before i pay out the money! i have heard that they are 'miracle cures' though....i was going to try otherwise a jointed eggbutt as i have one of these at home, i guess its the same kind of action as the one hes in at the moment just without the copper bits and without the straight bits on the side, which aid steering, which is something i dont have a problem with :) x

I'd also say Neue Schule, I had my big boy in a Verbindund and my baby in a Starter. Both were second hand, the first one was £20 and the second one £30 inc postage. Try ebay and BD classifieds...
