Dressage Markers - letters?

Does anyone know how the letters originated?

If you look at a full diagram the letters don't seem to make any sense eg why is V next to E etc?

Suspect the origin is continental. Anything daft comes from there

Oh I agree! but even then I don't know why those letters were chosen.

Also does anyone know the rhyme to remember them " All King Edwards Horses something, something, something" Need to teach my daughter!
