Can you explain the % score system of what is good and what is bad at prelim level?

like is 50% good
60% excellent
70% you should be doing Medium level !

I just look at my score and it means nothing ?

Interesting,

my opinion is to aim forTo qualify for area festivals its 60%.
Then 65% as these are approximatly the regional qualifying mark at each stage. they do vary with each level.

On this basis I am for 60% first at the chosen level and then 65%.

I have never seen anyone with over low 70's before!

opps sorry miss read I am pleased at prelim if I get between 55% and 65% (Normally get placed in top 5) I might start novice level when I get 65%
 
By the way your horse looks very similar to mine! Ship came from ireland. I would be very happy I like to be within 10% of the winner as that is 1 mark less per movement so you know the movements are nearly there!
 
Well if you get 50% overall then your marks average out at 5 per movement/collective which is described as "sufficient". If you get 60% then the average comes out as 6 which is "satisfactory", and 70% as 7 which is "good"!

Personally I think over 60% is a score to be pleased about and I think they say you should be consistently gaining 60% before considering going up a level. Normally if you get 70% or more you will be well up in the places.

However, it does depend a bit on the horses and the judges. If you have a very green, spooky, young horse then over 50% is quite an achievement! And of course some judges mark higher than others.
 
I was just amazed by the judging !

My dressage trainer rode my horse in a novice test and got 53 and she was really please ! the winner won on a 60% score ?

The score's were so different, across the whole event ?
 
Depends on the judge, as judging seems to vary vastly in unaffiliated dressage. I was regularly getting between 60 & 70% in Prelims, so have started doing some Novice tests and have been placed (3rd, 4th & 4th) in the 3 Novice tests I have competed in so far, and am getting between 60 & 65%.
 
I would not be satisfied unless I was in the late 60's early 70's for prelim.....for novice I look for over 65% and hope to improve because we have just moved up.

It really depends on your horse and the level of training so for a youngster over 60% is pretty good.

Got my best score ever at the weekend but it was for Nov Freestyle and the judges are always more generous in Freestyle....79.44%
 
Tbh I dont worry too much but like to get in the 60s!! I tend to look at the scores of people who consistently do well and aim to be up with them. If I'm 1 or 2% behind them then I know Ive done well. If I am way off then I know Ive got a lot of work to do! So I tend to look at where I am placed rather than the scores. I would do Novice when horse can do the movements required irrespective of the prelim marks, unless I was consistently getting less than 50% in which case the horse wouldnt be ready anyway.

TGM that is so true !

People who had everything, nice horse nice saddle, did not win, its the people that put the effort in that won !

Ok put it this way, people who came high in the Novice sections, came near last in the prelims ?
 
I would be reasonably happy with over 60% whatever test I did (into points at aff. novice level). The judges are supposed to judge to the level that you are competing at so a prelim judge will be looking for different things than a novice judge will. Also novice judges are more highly trained than prelim judges so will often see things a prelim judge wont and, in my experience are less prejudiced towards a horses type. I always used to get a higher mark in the novice tests than in the prelims with my arab.

I can't agree with that statement, at prelim a judge would be looking for forward, balance and rythm, a nice relaxed outline is a bonus but would not count as much in prelim as it would in novice where the outline would be fractionally higher, as your horse is an arab, perhaps he had more of a novice outline? I personally do not care what breed/type a horse is and try to judge according to breed/type at both levels, as I ride a non warmblood, I am particularly passionate about this. I was judgeing at doublescoops event (though not her test) and I believe it was a hairy coloured cob that won - mainly because he was one of the very few who was actually forward, and yes, there were horses there with flashier paces, but they were not nearly so correct.
 
Saw your last post and your judge was an affiliated judge, so well trained, nothing to worry about there. Your score was pretty good, above a 6 on average, so between satisfactory and fairly good.

The comments at the bottom of your sheet are the most important as these suggest areas in which your horse may be deficient in its training or way of going.

Dont forget that to manage the movements at the next level up, the horses way of going needs to be sufficient for that level.
That is a horse scoring well at prelim may not have the way of going to score highly at Novice, but the basics will be established. That is why the professionals are competing at a level below that at which they are training at home.

I think you should be well pleased, there was obviously much to like and the basics are ok to build on for the future.

What you personally are satisfied with is another matter and really what Dressage is all about and why it is so fascinating!!

For me it very much depends on the horse, if I was riding my just backed horse, I would be pleased to get mid 50s and very happy to get 60%. With a more established horse I would want mid to high 60s but technically

50% = sufficient
60% = satisfactory
70% = fairly good
80% = good
90% = v good
100% = excellent (in our dreams!)
