If you were to do a test with boots/bandages on....should the judge wait until the end to tell you, you've been eliminated?

has only happened to me once and this is what happened.

Can't find guidance in rule book

Mmmm.... Theres a question! If you were eliminated at the beginning how would you feel? Gone to all that effort and for what? Elimination as you enter. Really it would have been better if the stewards had said. Ive written for a judge when someone has been wearing boots. Her comment was I dont want to stop her from doing the test as shes made the effort to be here. But the judge had to eliminate her as it is the rules. And she did tell her straight away ie before she left the arena. But she still gave her fair comments in the test, she just couldnt get a rosette. This was a prelim though!

I have been eliminated during a Horse Trials for carrying a whip in the Dressage arena.

The steward hadn't noticed but as the competition was held under BE rules I should have read the rule book and also should have known better!!

I am afraid it is entirely your own fault.

I know one thing, you won't make the same mistake again

The rule book says you should be eliminated straight away but like the judge you had i would let you do the test so that a least you can have the sheet for a complete test so that not all is lost. Carrying a whip/ leaving boots on we've all done it but it is ultimately you the riders responsibility. i always get whoever is with me to yell at me! This happened today in the Novice regional at Addington one rider was carrying a whip she was allowed to carry on til the end of the test. A pity but at least she could go home with the sheets.

Its really at the judges discression. Most will allow you to continue,if its a busy day big class at say a championship you may get the bell rung on you as soon as the error is noticed.
Inthe case of bandages or boots i have been known to tell the competitor as they trot round as you really shouldnt have them on when you come up to the arena. The whip is more difficult as some like to carry it on the trot round the arena thats where the problem is as its not until you step inside the boards that it it not allowed.

its up to the judge whether they tell you or not, you should technically remember yourself!!

However i know someone who went into a test recently with bandages on and the judge mentioned it before the test started, she was allowed to take them off and then start her test.

However i also know someone who did a whole test with bandages on and the judge said nothing.

Rule book says elimination (not exactly sure when) However all the training I have done say- let them complete the test and eliminate them.

Realistically where possible judges may try to indicate to the rider before they ring the bell e.g. "you are going to take your boots off aren't you" kind of thing.

Ahhh really unsure!

To be fair to competitor i would like to tell them before they start, but I think perhaps you have to let them complete the test and then eliminate them.

Does anyone know if there is guidance for judges written anywhere?

I suppose really the guidance notes would say that it is not their job to tell you if your tack is wrong. Can you imagine the problems it could cause?

I guess you have paid your entry, therefore you are entitled to ride your test and be judged. However, if your tack is incorrect according to the rules then you run the risk of being eliminated, same as if your horse steps outside the arena.

I do know some judges have turned a blind eye at the very lowest levels of unaffliated and have had a quiet word afterwards. I guess it really is totally up to the judge.

Actualy reading the question properly....it does say "what would you do if a competitor STARTS a test with boot/bandages on". So answer has to be nothing, wait until end and tell them they have, unfortunately been eliminated.

Thanks everyone
