If a test asked you to go onto the left rein and do a 20m circle in canter and you could only pick up canter on the right lead but the horse was still balanced etc whats the maximum mark you could get for that movement?

If that made any sense?

Probably am not in best dressage judge humour today (see other posts today) but sadly by cantering the whole way round on the wrong lead you have not performed the movement at all. This will also afffect the mark for the next movement if you make no attempt to corrrect because for example you cannot make the correct transition to trot or medium canter if not on correct lead to start.
even if the tiresome horse has decided that all previous schooling was a waste of his time and is ignoring you totally you Must make an attempt to correct because then it shows you have at least noticed!
Not performed is zero though you may get one or two marks if anything else is in the movemt aside from the trans and the circle. if you try to correct, even if horse ignores you then it is just merely very bad and entitled to at least one mark.
Hope that helps though after today what do i know!!!

I agree with what BaJ has said - even at unaffiliated. You are effectively not performing the movement required and that is when they can give you a 0 - "not performed". Even though you're in canter you're not in left canter as the test has asked.

I would personally be inclined to err towards the 4 and be encouraging. But then I'm not a qualified dressage judge so others may disagree.

*runs upstairs to get test sheet from a few weeks back*

We scored a 3 for 20m circle in canter on left rein (prelim unaff)- comment said that we lost the canter and picked it up again on the wrong lead.

Actually S V its a foul lie as i havent updated my profile and am not in cheshire now! I was staying with friends when i registerd and am back in south now. thanks for reminding me to check profile! but we may have crossed paths anyway tho i didnt judge wheni was there as i was having a life crisis!!

So would you be better off trotting for this movement and pretending that you are trying to canter?

If you strike off on the left but show you realise its incorrect by bringing them back to trot and asking again, even if unsuccessful, I think this looks better than cantering around on the wrong leg. If you can correct the lead, you might be lucky and get a 5 although generally I would expect a 4. If you can't get the right canter at all, then you are probably right to wait for a while before doing a test. You could try and find a walk/trot test? Although not sure how commmon they are. Hope that helps, don't give up!

I had a wrong strike off in prelim 10 last week. I corrected it within say 1/2 a circle, and got a 3 for this movement. I thought this was fair. Thankfully the rest of the test was much much better though.

It depends exactle where the movement begins and ends and whether it includes any other transitions, but generally if whole movement is on the wrong lead, some people may give give a 0, although you did canter so more judges would give a 1 I would imagine. Some generous judges may give a little more. If you trot you are more likely to get a 0 (if no attempt at canter)
