I have a new horse and am about to buy a new dressage saddle for her and I'm wondering if I also need a jump saddle or event saddle for hacking. She's bred to jump but I don't so can use one of the other horses saddles for the odd occasion jumping but she is quite sharp and does a good drop shoulder and spin move out hacking. She has also got overexcited and almost bronced me out of the saddle. I was in a dressage saddle on each occasion and stayed on, just, but wondering if I need to get a jump/event saddle to be safer out hacking.
What do people find safest for hacking sharp idiot horses?

Personally I prefer hacking in dressage saddles just because they are what I'm used to and what I feel more comfortable in.

Think it's really down to personal preference and what you usually ride in.

Ditto. I'm hacking in a GP at the moment, and I feel like I'm swimming around in it. Feel far more secure in the dressage saddle when things get serious!

I agree. Unless you're doing high octane hacking that involves leaping giant logs and ditches in the woods (!) a dressage saddle would do just fine. I had both for my last boy and always felt more secure in my dressage saddle with its lovely deep seat and huge knee rolls. Haven't got a jumping saddle yet for my current horse, so we do everything very happily in our dressage saddle.

I only own a Dressage saddle.

When I actually ride, I only ride her in that (I don't jump either) - GP's don't really suit me and I don't feel comfortable in them - go with what is comfortable for you.

The saddle you are most secure and comfy in :) A GP that you don't find a good fit will be harder to stay on board in than a dressage saddle that suits :)

I only own a dressage saddle. And I do jump :p And do ditches, and hoon about. And one is young and silly and the other is sharp and spooky. I actually find the dressage more secure on a silly day than any GP.
