I am mainly doing dressage with my boy and until now have had various GP saddles, leather and synthetic none seem to suit him very well. The saddle fitter tried a dressage saddle on him and his way of going was completely different and a lot more comfortable for me too. If I buy him the dressage saddle, although that is all I am doing at the moment does it rule out doing a bit of jumping in the future, would I have to buy him a seperate saddle for just doing a bit of jumping in the field? I've only ever had GPs so don't really know sorry if a silly question!!

It depends on the dressage saddle and how big you are jumping.

If your dressage saddle has a very deep seat and big knee roles then it will be really difficult to get out of it to jump.

If you are only jumping 2ft and your saddle is not too deep then you could cope.

Have you thought of a working hunter saddle or a VSD they are straighter cut than a GP so should still allow the freedom round your horses shoulders but allow you to be able to jump in it.

I have jumped in a dressage saddle - not high though. I did feel a bit insecure with no real knee rolls and the leathers being further back made it seem a bit odd. Is there anyway you could keep a GP to just pop on if you wanted to jump or hack out?

I would keep a GP too, and get dr, thats what I have. I have an isabell dr and wouldn't fancy jumping in it! but have my old GP to hack/jump/hunt in.

the dr saddle was a treat last winter and it has helped no end.

both were 2nd hand though so didn't break the bank.

i was gonna say the same as chico, why dont you keep a GP that fits ok, and then have dressage saddle for everything else.
You can jump in dressage saddle, but its really difficult when you get over 2ft

Good idea, it was the wintec pro dressage I was going to get, it fitted him well, I could keep the GP he has at the moment for hacking but it doesn't fit him well enough, he finds it uncomfortable for cantering. Is it not a good idea to hack in the wintec pro dressage?

u can hack in ur dressage.
its just for jumping id keep a GP. However if yours doesnt fit particularly well, what about getting a wintec adjustable gullet saddle or something so you can change the gullet etc to fit him more comfortably?

I've jumped 2'6 in my Bates Caprilli dressage saddle, and up to 3'3 in other dressage/VSD saddles! (riding school ponies where I used to ride mostly had VSD/dressage saddles...)
Also depends on the length of your legs, and how short you have your leathers to jump I think. I tend to jump very much on the short side if I can, which makes jumping in a dressage saddle a bit odd, though doesn't stop me doing it!

Hacking in a dressage saddle is fine; even the odd fast canter is absolutely fine. I wouldn't want to jump in mine, but use it for everything else.
