Out of interest, and as a bit of market research can I have some help please :)

Our riding club is putting on a winter showjumping and dressage series - we are running six shows (once a month from october to march inclusive). We will have 4 dressage tests in the morning (walk and trot, prelim, novice, and elem/med (pick a test)) and then 4 showjumping classes in the afternoon, starting at 1'9", 2'3"-2'6", 2'9"-3' and an accumulator, with the larger fences worth the most points (fences up to 3'9")

The winner of each class will receive a small prize and/or keep trophy at every show. There will be a point system, and competitors can amass points over the series - We have a substantial prize bundle for each points champion for both dressage and showjumping, including rugs, saddlecloths, leatherwork, and a commissioned portrait of the winning horse.

We will also be running a championship show, so that the first three in each class qualify for the 'championships' at the end of the series. This means that those that cannot attend every show are still in with a chance of winning big prizes at the final in March.

As well as this, we will be having a 'most improved rider' category, and are currently working on a fantastic prize - the dressage winner will hopefully receive a saddle, and the show jumping winner will receive a 'sponsorship' consisting of paid for lessons and coaching for a year (these prizes are not yet confirmed)

There will be big keep trophies for the winners at the championships, as well as sashes and other prizes.

What I want to know is, is this enough to keep people interested - can we be doing any more to encourage people? Are big prizes the way to go, or are people more interested in smaller monthly prizes/trophies awarded down the line? What will keep people coming back month after month? Any help greatly appreciated.

I think that's definately enough to keep people interested!
Up here the BHS does a winter dressage/ showjumping series with a points system, they do the jumping on a different day to the dressage though. Each league has a different following, but they get quite a lot of people going! The only thing is I think you might struggle to fit all those classes into one day, for example start to finish our dressage alone runs from about 9.30am till 4/4.30pm! If you are using the same arena for dressage and jumping you might be better having them on different days.

Sounds great....I'd definatly have a go at both....nothing to loose! Wish my riding club would do something like that this winter, especially the chance of winning a saddle or sponsorship. I think it sounds like it would get all involved and a high amount of competition! Good luck! :)

The initial plan is to do it on the same day (thinking of venue hire charges etc) and if we get enough support, we will split to two seperate days. We have the use of more than one arena, so if we struggle for time, things can be split. At the moment, as such a fledgling club, we are really testing the water when it comes to entries - we don't want to go all out and split to two days, then end up not having the entries to pay the venue hire or insurance. If we get the support and entries, hopefully we can run two seperate days in the future.

Sounds like a good idea and great prizes. My only suggestion would be to take peoples email adresses and send out a mini newsletter with placings in to act as a reminder for the next show, to keep it in peoples mind.

I echo the above - its a good way to let people know where they stand etc. Also, they are GREAT prizes! I'd nearly pack up and travel over myself to compete!!

Sounds fantastic, what ace prizes! I would certainly be tempted to have a go! Will you have any restrictions on the classes? I always get a bit put off if the levels go quite high (for me!) but with no restriction in the lower classes - when I do prelim and get beaten by the person who goes on to win the novice I do feel rather gutted! Wish you were running that closer to me, it really sounds fantastic!
