Hi,

Can anyone tell me if you can use music with lyrics in it for BD Freestyle tests?

Also what type of movements and paces are required in a novice freestyle test?

We are just starting to compete affiliated Prelim, but I would really love to have a go at the freestyle, do I need to be competing at quite a higher level to be up to it? BD don't seem to do Prelim freestyle

Thanks!!

Hi, yes you can use lyrics in DTM and, although the feeling is they are a little frowned upon, plenty of well known riders use them and do ok. To be honest much depends upon what the lyrics are and how appropriate they are. I always remember someone years ago finishing her test with Tina Turners 'simply the best, better than all the rest'. It went down really well and she won alot of classes.

At novice level the required movements are medium and free walk (20m of each), 15m circles in working trot both ways, medium trot, 20m circles in canter both ways and the halts at beginning and end. You can include any other movements allowed at novice level ie counter canter, rein back etc. You cannot include movements above novice level as you will be penalised if you do.

Thanks thats really helpful, it would be nice if they did a Prelim freestyle though!! Would you get more marks then for doing rein back and counter canter etc than just doing the more basic required stuff.

How do they mark the test? Do they write down your moves as you do it and give you a mark for each or is it just a general mark on performance?

Also does anyone have any experience of using the Dressage Divas cd rom for doing their music - any thoughts please!?

Hiya, BD have a freestyle scoresheet that has the compulsory moves listed on it and the judge marks you as you do each one. Then you are also awarded marks for the choreography, interpretation of the music etc and you will get higher artistic marks if you include more difficult moves but it is only a good idea to do them if you can do them well.

Have never used Dressage Divaz so have no idea how it works but I'm sure someone on here must have.

People have mentioned dressage diva and had problems but I have no experience of it myself.
Don't think you will get better marks unless it makes the overall pattern look better, if you do rein back etc.
Make sure you clearly show the required movements as not all the judges are that bright.I got a bad mark [5] for my walk and the comment not 20 meters, I think the judge forgot it was a 20 x 60 arena I definately did over 20 meters of med. walk and free walk but not in the usual across the diagonal way.
I came equal 3rd but they then go on music mark and mine was lower so came 4th and 3 qualify, damn, only 2 marks less than winner as well . So shows you how important to clearly show movements

I see.

Carthorse - What level do you compete at in normal dressage? And whats your opinion of music with lyrics?

Are all freestyles done in 20x60 or can you do 20x40?

Hi

I've got the Dressage Divas CD-ROM and can't make head nor tail of it. I understood it allowed you to download videos of your horse in all paces and then could set music against it to check the beat went with the paces, but it doesn't seem to.

There's just a few sections on the menu that describes what you should do to seek out suitable music, but nothing on the CD-ROM that actually helps you do it! It looks almost as if half the stuff that should be on it is missing.

There are no instructions, and I assumed either my computer didn't have the right settings or I'm just dim!

madhossy - I am rubbish with computers so think I'll give that one a miss then!! There's no point me trying!

Have you found a better way to get some music sorted then?

IF you use lyrics and they distract from the test, u wil get marked down. But if the words enhance the music etc it can only work to your advantage.
The paces on the horses vary so much as u get the youngsters at the beginning of their career and then theolder more "novice" type horse!
I would suggest not using a rein back as it stops the flow of the test, and will probably not help things!
One thing tho, make sure your music is not bigger than your horse, u want to enhance the paces and movements, not drown them by using music tht is too powerful!
Have fun

The only music I have found so far (admit that I haven't really searched for ages) that fits my horses paces is a couple of Robbie Williams tracks from the Swing when your Winning cd (mack the knife etc) and I really like them and they suit his way of going!

Better start looking again then if lyrics are a no no - he needs something fairly up tempo to keep him active, but he has fairly smooth long paces so nothing too dramatic.

I had the same thing with the walk... I think safest thing is to do a 20m circle in the walk just to keep them happy lol

You are only allowed to do movement that are permitted at that level, you can do non complusory movements but not if they are a higher level, e.g dont do trot half pass in an novice, if you do you will be penalised -2 for each thing you do.

Hi

Thanks for that, someone mentioned rein back and counter canter, which novice tests do these feature in? All I can really find in the novice ones I've got are circles and loops of various sizes in walk trot and canter, medium trot and medium canter, give and re-take reins - do any of the novice tests have any thing more advanced or any lateral work?

Ah, thank you - all the ones I don't have!! Apart from 21, is there just a little bit of counter canter come when you do the half 15m circle and return back to the track, then trot bit?
