Hi there

Now i have actually just about (I think/maybe) learnt both tests, whilst having a play on fred, I wondered if it actually mattered and you get marked on:-

Whether you sit to the correct diagonal when trotting?
Do they expect you to change whip side each time you change rein?!

Dumb questions I know but i really don't know!

I am presuming (hoping) you dont get marked on your own riding?? more the horses going!! (Being a jumpy person )

Thank you xx

There is only one specific mark for the rider (the last of the collective marks at the bottom of the sheet) (which is out of 10x2 ie a max of 20) out of maybe a total mark of 200-250 for the test.
NB have read this through and it sort of makes sense

Do not bother to swop your whip, it is not nessacary as the judge will not focus on your whip.
Correct diagonal is nessacary in order for the horse to bend properly so thats fairly standards.

You should definately not get penalised for being on the wrong diagonal if it's a BD listed judge, and as others have said don't bother to swop your whip over unless you really need to. Although there is a mark for position and effect of the aids the above do not come into it.
There are some differing views amongst the various european schools as too which is the correct diagonal anyway!!

But if you are particularly pants with diagonals, dont worry about it, as they hardly ever notice. I have really bad eyesight and before I learnt to feel what diagonal I was on, I couldnt tell whether I was on the correct one, as I cant see the horses shoulder clearly! Judges hardly ever noticed, if they did they would only ever dock a mark!

Diagonal IS important !! I do mark down if its not noticed and it will be taken off the rider mark, something to do with the correctness and application of aids! As for the whip it stays in one hand, your choice which , just make sure you dont salute with it in that hand.ie salute with the other hand.
How you ride will dirrectly affect the way the horse goes dressage involves rider development as well as the horse.
Goodluck!

If this is your first test stop worrying!!! Just try to be as accurate as possible and think of it as schooling with a posh name!!! I think more marks are lost in dressage because riders are worried and tense! Smile lots and dont worry if things go a bit wrong. It happens to everyone and everyone has to start somewhere.
