First proper dressage competition coming up for daughter (13) and the grubby grey one. She's done some showing classes at local shows but what does she need to wear for dressage? We have either a black or navy tweed jacket, cream jodphurs and she wears jodphurs boots and clips for shows but will she need long boots for dressage. It's only intro a at a local dressage club so not sure how strict they are on clothing. Also does she need white gloves or would darker ones be better for a beginner? Thanks :)

either jacket
jods are fine but wear chaps...long boots arent needed/''shouldnt'' be worn till you are over 16
light coloured gloves are correct and in bd rules.

Dont understand why long boots shouldnt be worn till your over 16, surely thats outdated with about 50 years! I wore long boots since I was 9 and so does any young person i know.

I think chaps look awful unless you have gaiters. so would nearly stick with just short boots

Iv always worn black or navy gloves for dressage as i read somewhere before that light coloured gloves can draw attnetion to your hands especiialy if your moving them a bit too much, but i know nothing about BD so dont want you to end up wearing something illegal, best stick with light coloured ones

Tweed is more correct at the lower levels (I wear tweed at Elementary) and personally I think youngsters should be in tweed for everything except show ponies (with Pony Club tie of they are a member). Not sure what's in the rules but I think under 16s should be in short boots + clips for everything. Light gloves are popular but the BD rules now state that they are not compulsory. I tend to wear old school string gloves with a cream back like this for normal shows - they are light-ish and suit the overall look:

I wear cream leather gloves for championships/at posh venue lol :D

ETA The point of bringing light gloves was to draw attention to the hands. We should always strive for quiet, steady hands so look at this as a training point ;) Plus I have a hogged how cob and a Welsh cob so tweed feels far more correct on them anyway. The only black jacket I own is my hunting coat :D

Well here goes, my daughter (14 now) wears white jods and gaiters and dark gloves with a black jacket . We dont (cant afford) have jackets of different colours etc so have to use what we can. She has only competed unaffiliated and pony club area level so we have never worried more. Go to one of the shows and see what is expected
Good luck

Thanks everyone really helpful - maree t, everything is so expensive ecspecially the jackets I'm always looking in the sales if she needs anything and them shooting up and out all the time doesn't help

Gloves can be brown/ black/ light colour... Pretty sure, as my sister wears brown for unaff., BE and PC areas and only gets compliments on her turn out.

As long as she's neat and tidy (remember her hairnet!) and has clearly made an effort, any of what you've mentioned will be fine.
